Info: | * MAX HEBERT (Stereo, Soul Science, MTL) w/ Steven Caicedo (Proton Radio, NYC) " Steven Caicedo's interest began when he bought his first pair of turntables after completing boot camp in the summer of 1997. Like many DJs, he taught himself how to spin records by watching and emulating the DJs he admired. Eventually, he developed a sound of his own, which he classifies as "deep house with a moody progressive edge". Steven grew up with his older brother, sister and Columbian born parents in Queens, New York. By age 16, he found himself sneaking out of his parent’s house eager to check out local DJs at Manhattan's infamous Tunnel nightclub, namely Danny Teneglia. Little did he know that only five years later, he would fortuitously find himself inside the DJ booth of that very same club, playing his records and perhaps even influencing an upcoming generation of DJs. It was late night excursions such as these, where Steven discovered a source of freedom, excitement and inspiration, ultimately awakening his own dreams of conducting music behind a set of turntables. While DJing began as a part time hobby for Steven, it developed into a habit that stretched outside the walls of his apartment. "It became an extension of the hobby...it was something I did so I could invite my friends to hear me play in a place other than my room on a proper sound system." In addition, he wanted to put his record collection to use, which now easily exceeds ten thousand. After years of bedroom performances and house party practice sessions, Steven soon found himself playing live for the first time at New York City's Bowery Ballroom in May of 1999, attracting the attention of both club promoters and managers alike. Tom Kim, of Nettwerk Management, describes the first time he heard Steven play, "I knew Steven had talent the first time I saw him spin back in 1999. He has an ability to read the crowd, teasing them with minimal tracks and then dropping the anthems at the precise moments to make people lose their heads. The consistency of his track selection and his smooth mixing always impresses me…he is a humble and modest person always smiling." " |
