I think the best part about G-Mail is going to be that they scan your e-mail for key words to target you with ads. Kinda like if your cell phone company would tap your phone and give your number to telemarketers who are selling something related to what your talking about.
Privacy = pwn3d Of course, you can always go over to [ www.spymac.com ] and get yourself a 1gig email account RIGHT NOW, that's got a web interface and can be accesed by POP3, 350 megs of space for a website, a blog, an auction system, a personal messageboard... |

yeah, if your phoneline was free, and was being listened to by computers, no humans, and instead of telemarketers there would be ads on your phone's screensaver.
the ads aren't going to be spam, they're going to be the same kinds of ads as google currently uses. |

Yeah, let's completely dissregard that certain key-words could be flagged and the emails with said key-words could possibly be set aside for humans to review.
And yes, there ARE programs that are scanning for key words all over the internet. I just find it particularly stupid that you have to "agree" to let your e-mail be "read" for marketing purposes. That can, and WILL, be abused. Oh, and what about the part where none of your e-mail ever gets "really" deleted, it's just stored on the server in your trash folder "just in case" you accidentaly delete something important and want to use the AMAZING google technology to search your email. |

hold on a second, i'm going to put on my tinfoil hat.
first of all, keyword flagging is something that's been discussed for years. who's to say it's not already being done? besides, if you're discussing something illegal, that's your perogative. you take your own risks. as for it being abused... how? they'll display text based ads like they already do. anything else would not be cost effective. there's a reason Yahoo and Hotmail are so damn extreme with their spam filters. how many people do you think have a hotmail and/or yahoo account? they could easily sell their lists, but it just wouldn't be worth it for the increased costs in storage or bandwith. as for nothing ever really being deleted, number 1, that's already technically the case everywhere. second, i don't see how it's that much of a privacy issue. besides, no one is forcing you to use gmail or to agree to having your email "read". it's a free service, for christsakes. you either deal with certain aspects of it, or you go to hotmail for free and get 2 megs. or better yet, you spend $4 a month and get several gigs of email storage, plus web hosting too and your own personal domain. |

that's what snail mail is for.
better yet, develop your own sign language with your mom and communicate with her in person using the sign language. |

google with their infinite storage for caching and indexing aside, i wonder how spymac can offer free 1gig mailboxes. i mean sure, hard drive space is cheap now and its obvious very few people would actually use 50megs, let alone the entire 1g (i am SURE they have a maximum attachment size policy), but still, a 200g HD costs something like 130CAD and thats not pennies...
as for gmail, well, i'd use it for what its good for - as a file dump account (if i needed one, considering i dont now). attachment size policies can be easily overridden with archives broken to parts with RAR.. anyone ever get warez from newsgroups? ;) |

fred, if you want you can just send all your emails as encrypted hashes.. i think that might be secure. |

Ian, if it weren't for the fact that entierly too many people don't care about things like computer security and keeping private, I wouldn't send any personal e-mails that aren't PGP'd |

security and privacy are two different things.
i don't care who reads my emails cause there's almost never anything sensitive in them.. security on the other hand is something only computer literate people can do something about.. and there's far to many people who know nothing of computers.. so their comps are insecure.. |
