references are only good if you have no need to change the variable value! if you have to lets say increment or anything you would use a pointer but it really comes down to a good analyse of the problem and well a suitable solution !

no but seriously some problem will be easier to solve with references and others with pointers! if your function needs to change a variable well pointers is the way to go but if you dont need and dont wANT to change it make sure to use a reference that way your code is more secure and clear from someone else point of view!

its all about security!
