I agree that the addiction rating of alcohol (81 compared to 80 for heroin) does seem suprisingly high. However, I think there are few things to consider about alcohol that might justify its high rating:

1. many people start drinking at an early age, continue drinking, then develop alcohol-related problems later on in life. so while there probably aren't too many teens at AA meetings, alot of teens who today are heavy drinkers will eventually become alcoholics.

2. heroin has such a bad name in our society that most of the people who use it already have major issues. alcohol, on the other hand, is tried by most healthy people, who probably won't develop addictions to either alcohol OR heroin (if they were to try it). a historical example would be the thousands of U.S. army soldiers who used heroin when they went to Vietnam, most of whom did not develop problems when they returned to the u.s.

3. i think that to a large extent, we are socialized to the negative effects of alcohol, so we just tend to ignore or take for granted its ill effects. for example, someone at a party who is vomiting and feeling very sick from too much alcohol doesn't really attract much attention, while if someone is vomiting from the use of an illegal drug, people tend to be much more worried. another ill effect of alcohol that people tend to take for granted is its role in promoting violence. many, if not most, acts of unplanned violence, domestic abuse, and other crimes, involve people who are under the influence of alcohol.

dan by any chance are you in scientific studies? or is all your research purely curiosity?

Purely curiousity :) I started doing research into drugs about the same time as I started using. I owe it to myself to learn all I can about the substances I consume, both to minimise harm and to make the most out of the substance's potential.

good stuff. I find your reports highly fascinating...though i wouldn't put half the substance in my system that you do, still none the less...interesting.

Dan have you ever read the Cosmic Serpent? It's all about Ayahuasca and its ties to its creation.

sorry, i cant let this one go by without a response. though i agree it is hard to hang out with ppl who do a drug you have quit/are trying to quit, i don't think that this means one must stop hanging out with them. The friendship still is real and the feelings and attachments between ppl are still there...and you shouldnt just throw that away. you can hang out with them without doing drugs, no?
and scotty...you can take that miss out of its quotation marks, i can tell you that i genuinely and sincerely miss jenn, and my being a methheaf does SHITALL to change that.

maybe you should be the one to make the effort to stop if you miss your friend so much

you have a point. but if i do not want to quit at this moment in time for whatever reason- does that mean i cannot still care about and want to see people who do not do it or even are against it? i don't think i have to choose between meth and friends - it is possible to have both

And what if it's NOT possible to have both? What if having the meth is making your friends worry themselves to DEATH over you. What if, it's better for them NOT to see you because seeing what it's doing to you makes them want to die? Ever think that YOUR problems (that unfortunately you don't see as problems) are causing other people grief and sorrow? You can't even care for yourself and your own life and health, how the fuck can anyone believe that you can possibly care about them?

I don't need any details whatsoever. My message wasn't a line of inquiry so much as a statement of facts on the matter at hand.

To scotty: Let people do what they want. I know it can be hard to quit a drug n hang with ur friends who are still using, but hey, my friends also have the courtesy of not using in front of me.
It was my choice to quit, and im not going toimpress a personal decision on my friends.
They can do what they want.

THAT is exactly the problem with others. At least YOU care about your friend more than you care about your addiction.

Other people, on the other hand...

Why aren't inhalants listed?

I've heard that that sniffing glue/gas/etc are some of the most addictive drug habits...

I'm glad you find my trip reports interesting :) Stay tuned for more...

And I haven't read the book, but the topic sounds interesting. Could you lend it to me, if you have a copy?
