[ MTLDNB.COM ] b]MAYHEM & PSIDREAM INTERVIEWS

Particulars:

Mayhem
Name: Anthony Rotella
Age: 21
Hometown: Atlanta, GA
Website: [ www.shadow-law.com ]
Releases: [ www.tarzan.spoox.org ]

One of the youngest signed producers on the circuit, Mayhem has recently formed Shadow Law Recordings, a label which promises to deliver plenty of forward thinking dnb. Promo's for the fist release are currently out featuring two stinking hot tunes from Sinthetix. Having recently signed to Rymetyme's 1210 and completing a European tour, Mayhem is showing no signs of slowing down.

Psidream
Name:Jeff Malcolm
Age: 23
Hometown: Vancouver, BC, Canada
Website: [ www.psidream.com ]
Releases: [ tarzan.spoox.org ]

Psidream is currently one of Canada's leading drum n bass producers. Over the last year, his status has catapulted With tracks released and forthcoming on Breakbeat Science, Skynet's nVision label, Killahertz Recordings (with his well-rinsed smasher "Neurosis") and Trace's DSCi4. His music has been played to the masses by the likes of Concord Dawn, Dieselboy, High Contrast, Pendulum, Stakka & Skynet, Technical Itch, and his tracks "Solar Waves" and "Identity" were featured on DJ Dara's "Exercise.01" mix CD.

[ ] Tell us both about your musical backgrounds, do you play any instruments? Which came first, producing or DJing?

[Mayhem] I played guitar from the ages of 9 to 15. At 11 i began producing soley on a computer and headphones, then later moving to a more equipped studio set up with more outboard gear. I began djing at 15 which was around the time i lost my interest in playing with my garage band.

[Psidream] I've been into all kinds of music from a young age.. I took up piano lessonswhen I was younger for about 8 years and did some conservatory classical and then some jazz like Charlie Parker and Dave Brubeck. Producing came way before I got into DJ'ing - I was messing with old tracker programs and then eventually got into DJ'ing through that.

[ ] Which drum n bass artists do you believe have inspired you the most?

[Mayhem] Matrix, Ed Rush, Optical, Konflict and later kemal, Ram Trilogy, Teebee, Stakka, Skynet, Bad Company, Rymetyme, C4C, Fierce, Trace, and Dom.

[Psidream] There are tons.. Ed Rush & Optical, Teebee, Kemal, Matrix, Photek, Hive, Klute, Polar, Omni Trio, Dom, Tech Itch, Keaton, Stakka, Skynet, C4C, to name a few.

[ ] How would you describe your style/sound as a producer?

[Mayhem] Minimal, overdriven, rough and funky

[Psidream] Varied I guess... I'm all over the map really... I've done a lot of really deep and melodic tunes and a couple spacey technical ones, some more neurofunk stuff, and then lately I've been focusing on more of a dark breaky vibe. I like deep stuff though, whether it's heavy or light. I like music with a lot of substance and atmosphere, but with attitude.

[ ] Which of your tunes are you most proud of and why?

[Mayhem] 'Tsunami'. it think its the 1st solo tune thats really come out the way i wanted. im a perfectionist and i constantly am looking for and find faults /
improvements in my tunes.

[Psidream] 'Solar Waves' is definitely one - it was proof that scrapping tunes that don't make the cut right away may not be the best way. It was the first tune I did in Logic and then I eventually redid it about a year later and it got picked up by Breakbeat Science right away. "Heartfelt", because I made it just after I got a new PC, so my computer was able to handle a lot more. I thought it was a bit of a step up in that respect. "Secret Life", mainly because I just really like the melodies and everything that's going on in the tune. "Time Goes By" because I love how the beats roll, and it's got a lot of emotion. "Sentience" because the first half is downtempo, which was a bit of an experiment.

[ ] Who have you collaborated with?

[Mayhem] Kiko, Rob F, Impulse, Chris.Su, Mindscape, Noisia, Evol Intent, Psidream, Infiltrata, Glitch, and MC Mecha.

[Psidream] I've just completed 3 tunes with Mechwarrior, who is a good friend of mine who moved to Vancouver from Australia a little while ago. "Stitches" has been received the best out of the 3. "Deepfreeze" will be coming on DSCI4, and a third is in the works. I made "Time Goes By" (on Warm Communications) with Resound from Finland, "Blacksound" with Gabriel from L.A., and "Avalanche" (on Payload) with Mayhem and Infiltrata from Atlanta and L.A, respectively. I've also done 10 or so breaks tunes/remixes with Oddmud under the name Influenza.

[ ] Do you ever delve into other genres besides drum n bass?

[Mayhem] Im currently trying to finish up an albums worth of downtempo and idm. I dont really plan on it getting released, I just enjoy the style and have fun with It. I'm also working with a MC named Chris Kringle on hiphop.

[Psidream] Breaks is my secondary focus. Oddmud and I make tunes as Influenza, and we've signed a few things to labels like Electrofly, Pure Phunk, I-Lectrik, and Sponge. We are currently having a tune remixed by Krafty Kuts for a release on Pure Phunk.

[ ] Can you shed any light on the gear you're currently using? Is your set-up software based? Any hardware?

[Mayhem] I run a pc with Logic Audio. Ive got an emu, a 16 track mixer, a few outboard compressors and effects, and a midi controller.

[Psidream] My setup is software based, and I have a Radium 61 midi controller and a pair of Tannoy Reveal Active monitors. I use Logic Audio Platinum for PC and various VST synths/samplers - I've been using Kontakt a lot lately, it's amazing. The only stint I've had with real gear is doing "Avalanche" at Mayhem's place with his Emu sampler. It made me want to buy one =)

[ ] What are your thoughts on the quality of the material released by North American producers compared to what comes out of the UK?

[Mayhem] I like music from all around the world. There's great american arists as well as great Brittish ones. I like all kinds of d&b from Amit to C4C to Makato. i dont see the point in comparing one against the other

[Psidream] I'm feeling the U.S. stuff a lot more. I still like a few tunes that come out of the core UK artists, but I'm more into what's going on in North America - it's just the right sound for me.

[ ] Which producers/labels do you feel are REALLY pushing the boundaries?

[Mayhem] SKC and Bratwas new music is incorporating lots of new ideas. Amit has a very nice twist on his sound, the eastern scales are a big influence on me lately. Pendulum's tunes show an incredible ammount of complexity and constantly are making new rhythms and melodies apart from the norm. I like the direction Kemal is heading, very hi-fi. It's nice to hear the boundaries pushed, but what matters most to me is good music and vibes.

[Psidream] Chris.su & SKC, Cause 4 Concern, Teebee, Matrix, Hive, Gridlok, Pacific, Kaos/Karl K/Jae Kennedy, Ed Rush & Optical, Skynet, and many more. For labels - Armada, Subtitles, Habit, Violence, Warm Communications, Human, Virus, Metro, etc.

[ ] With the internet used more prominently in our daily lives, and the introduction of new technologies such as Final Scratch, where do you think the art of djing is heading? Furthermore do you think the combination of such technologies could have a noticeable effect on record sales or even be detrimental to dubplate culture?

[Mayhem] Yeah the record industry is definitely taking a hit right now. people aren't selling the kind of numbers that they used to. With my label, Shadow Law, I'm looking to start releasing cd singles and mix cds in addtion to vinyl. I hope that more labels push this medium. i think the scene is in need of more fans / general listeners, and at the moment there is no way to get that music into their hands aside from going and hearing it at a club. cd's are a part of the solution. at parties in my hometown, the crowd is primarily comprised of djs and producers. I dont know if its as prevelant in others scenes. the scene definitely needs to start getting the music to new audiences and from there it will trickle down back to the vinyl market.

[Psidream] I don't think DJ'ing is going to go anywhere for a little while, but whether vinyl will be a key part of that is another question.. Economically, vinyl doesn't make sense, but it is a huge part of DJ culture, and there will always be people who are determined to keep it going, which is good. I prefer vinyl because of the physical aspect of it. I think It's more interesting to see someone playing on vinyl than on CDJ's, but it's more about the music than anything - I could see a future in drum&bass CD releases doing well, as long as file sharing issues are kept in control. I prefer to use CD's because it's much easier to test my own tunes as well as play new material from other artists.

[ ] would you describe your style as a DJ? Deep n Rollin or Anthem Bashing?

[Mayhem] I try to play all over. I'll play some liquid funk tunes, some anthems, neurofunk, amen mash-ups, even some bootlegs. I like playing across the board. But I also like to play what I think's appropriate. if I'm opening or playing earlier in the night i dont want to try to rinse the heaviest tunes I have. I'll tend to play deeper and lighter.

[Psidream] I play everything, but I'm more about presenting new sounds rather than playing huge tunes.. there are plenty of people that do that. But if a tune is huge and I like it, I'll play it. I typically split up my sets between more deep/rolling/neurofunk stuff to heavy stuff with a lot of surreal sounds and nasty basslines. It really depends on the show.

[ ] the time you've spent touring, what's your most memorable DJing experience/venue/crowd?

[Mayhem] There's have been alot of memorable gigs in the past 4 years. Puerto Rico, Scotland, San Fransisco, Austria, Estonia, and Utrecht. the most memorable ones have been in Atlanta. nothing makes me happier than to see a huge crowd in my hometown really into dnb.

[Psidream] The one I liked the most in recent memory was on Vancouver Island in Nanaimo. The crowd there was amazing... it was in a pretty underground/warehouse-style venue, and it was about 400 pilled up kids who were loving everything. Oddmud came along and we had a blast... they were up for anything, whether it was really heavy or deep and groovin'.

[ ] What are the top 10 tracks you're currently thrashing in your
sets?

[Mayhem]

Fission - 'Slave'
Evol Intent - 'Corrupt Cops remix'

[ ] What can we look forward to seeing/hearing from you in the future?

[Mayhem] I'm just finishing up new tunes with evol intent, mindscape, 2 new things with noisia, and one with chris.su and rob f. im plan on getting in the studio with psidream in about a week, and hope to do a new tune with kiko and mecha in the next few months. aside from that i plan to do a rmx of kiko's blowfish for nerve. ive got releases coming on Subtitles, Habit, Nvision, Payload, and eventually Armada.

[Psidream] I've got a few releases lined up that are slowly making their way to the shelves. A 12" with Resound for Warm, a tune on Ohm Resistance, a 12" on Skynet's nVision label, a 12" and another tune on Habit, a single on DSCI4, a tune for Payload, a tune for Levitated, and a few others.
