I'd make a list - but it'd be easier to just look at one of those 'top 100' djs polls... remove Mills and Hawtin from the list and replace them with a couple of jocks that should have made the list.

I'd rather think about who I actually like - rather than wasting time detailing people that suck ass...

So... here's a handful of people that I wasn't supposed to like - but really did.

Terence Parker - played a show with him in Iowa in '99. He was a little sloppy, but he was also constantly messing around... and anyone who takes that many risks during a set isn't going to win all the little battles. Inspiring.

Josh Wink - caught him opening for Meat Beat Manifesto (Minneapolis '98). He announced before he started that he wouldn't be playing dance music. "Meat Beat is here to make you dance, I'm here to keep you entertained until they take the stage." He had prototypes of some kind of minidisc sampler that Sony released a few months later. He was taking known tracks and cutting loops in odd time signatures (ie: a six beat loop from Higher State Of Consciousness that had confused kids falling down trying to dance to it).

Terry Mullan - saw him play at Furthur in 1996 on an almost blown sound system at about 6am on Saturday morning. It was one of the rawest, dirtiest things I've ever heard. I think the set was an anomaly, but I can't be sure... he's been a no show every other time I was supposed to see him play.

Scott Hardkiss - this one was also at Furthur '96.. Sunday night... he dropped a white label mix of Elton John's Rocket Man that blew my mind. Filtered and timestretched and wonderful. I'd probably hate it now, but eight years ago that sort of thing still hadn't been done to death.

Harry Chan - the guy plays all sorts of house... he sometimes plays funky breaks. In short, he plays music that I usually hate... and while there have been DJs who've been able to sustain my interest for part of a set, or a whole set... this guy has never failed to do the job. Imho, he's the single most under rated dj in the country and puts a lot of big names to shame.

I should probably be ashamed... but I'm not. I mean - it's probably been about eight years since I played any of his records (scratch that, Just A Track from the Trance Atlantic 6x12" set is great - and shows up in a mix I did in 2002) - and I went in with fairly low expectations... but I came away pleased.

Yeah .. Josh Wink... rave times in Steve's old loft = good times.

but Josh Wink these days licks cack.
On the Josh Wink annecdote topic.
He got felt up by the cops in front of everyone after waiting for an hour inside Aria that time there was a stabbing.

that = good times too... come to think of it.

P.s. Lafleche FISTS!!!

Stacey Pullan SUCKS ASS
Cisco Ferreira ... SHITTIEST LIVE SETS. great producer, but a scam artist when he plays live
BANDO... WTF is UP with this guy? his tunes SUCK

can we diss local DJs also? i've been doing a lot of that lately....
XL.... YAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWNNNNN so fucking boring. smokes more cigarettes in an average set than the total amount of records he plays.

Devilfish.. thought they sucked live...
Honestly though i haven't heard that many BAD out-of-town DJs... there's a lot of terrible DnB DJs, can I bash them on the tek forum? Jumpin Jack Frost... Kenny Ken.. Marcus Intalek or whatever his name is... these guys don't even PRETEND to mix...

Christian Smith I find boring nowadays ya, but I heard him play (for the first time) at some fucked up party that got busted, i forget the name (barbara and yaz played too) D-something... and he was good that night even with the ceiling plaster falling all over the decks and shit.

I heard Jeff Mills play a horrid set once, but I heard him play a mindblowing one also...

Ya, Atkins, May, old news... Beltram also, he sucks.
Rino Cerrone sucks ass as a DJ, makes good tunes.

my two cents on Josh Wink:

saw him play a couple of times pre 2000 and though he was playing perhaps music that wasnt 100% up my alley, he was fucking ON. i always thought of him as one of the best DJs i ever saw in terms of set programming, EQing (this guy understands his bass frequency) and long, smooth beat mixing... I also saw him at that fuckhole Illume once, where he spent the whole time talking to Tiga, playing shitty house and not bothering to even try, that sucked. (when I saw Richie in that fuckhole Nexxt, same spot, reminded me a lot of that Wink set actually)...

Another shitty DJ, this'll piss some people off:
Adam X... I've heard this guy trainwreck a BUNCH of times, though he's also constantly playing really fucked up tracks with weird beats structures and shit... still a fun DJ to hear, but ROUGH.

ditto on the LAFLECHE also, he's fucking BOOOORRRRRRRRRRIIIINNNG. i enjoyed some of his pre-2000 sets at Sona mind you, he used to be able to mix. more recently he always sounded like he was rolling on E and barely even able to keep a handle on his set, fucking cutting highs and bass and forgetting about it, struggling to cue the next track up, a complete mess.

I dunno, I saw T-1000 play some pretty hard sets, that were tight and well programmed, but I have seen him on a possible "off day" aswell...

...from my perspective, I'd say that it's pretty hard to be constant unless you're promoting something tangeble or solid like an album or comp. I think some gigs suck cause of a number of different things, and I've never seen a dj or producer who was constantly flawless unless we include the ones who just move-sink over a DAT...

I think I'm just babblin' now, so I'll shutup...

Ufot-remembering what your point was before you babbled...
