What Is Prog House

I think this would be a good topic.. it seems very few people have a good description of what progressive house actually is... I'm still not actually too sure myself after a few years of listening to it on and off..
Generally I say.. it's kind of like progressive trance with the cheese removed... But I dunno... what do you think of this style... |

Well it's less melodic, more focused on rythm...basically house but progressive with like long notes played with pads and such....I dunno, the name seems descriptive enough to me....pretty clear... |

yeah. prog house.. for me, when a style is called prog anything, it means that the proggesion of the song is the main focus. As apose to all the hard bashing sounds just randomly thrown into the track.. like, the sounds evolve throughout the song, without really changing the rythm nor the structure.. Focusing on small changes in the sounds already heard throughout the track. Its most probably very predictive music.
maybe i'm totally off, cause i dont listen to house all that much, but like carlso, it seems pretty obvious just by the name.. prog.. hehe :) |

I used to think that's what they meant by progressive but I think it is meant more like the term "progressive rock" for rock... as in cutting edge or what not (even though prog. house has been around for quite a while and prog. trance even longer)....
A lot of the songs focus on the progressive of the song but I have heard quite a few that are more like traditional songs with refrain and chorus and what not especially if it's a vocal track... |

if progression was really meant to be progressive (as it was in prog rock) - then I think we'd be hearing a lot more material in the vein of Mechanism (check Angel In Descent on IST), Steven Sick (see Frontline Of Sound)... just about every 'progressive' track I hear sounds like a knock-off of something that was progressive a dozen years ago.
How many times can people rip off... a) the meltdown b) l'esperanza c) stella d) age of love then again... the dutch gabberhaus scene managed to pull the wool over people's eyes by upping the tempo and most people still haven't noticed that everything is pretty much a knock off of James Brown Is Dead, Dominator or Anasthasia. |

for me the difference between progressive trance and progressive house is:
Progressive Trance: 130 to 137bpm Has longer high hats that are often found in regular trance. Trance style baselines, without the crazy epic synth going on. Has buildups, but nowhere near the kinda found in epic/hard trance. much more low-key. Progressive House: 123 to 129bpm Has highs that are at the same time as the beat, and are often doubled (two hi-hat hits per beat) Minimal if any synth. Is often tribal, can have bass guitar basslines. Buildups are rare and if they happen will be very short, mainly bass dropping than coming right back GOA style.. (even though GOA likes its half second of silence, and not just bass cutting out) |

I dont know much about prog house other then I once went to see some dj at area 51 this oing gone electronic music club in toronto (more of a hole in the wall) when I lived there based on some dude recommendation to me to go check out this guy hes a great dj bla bla bla...
I went and I listened and humm thats sort of interesting its kind of percussive but slower then techno and not really house... in a traditional sence other then the bpms... then I tried to dance to it...and umm well basically it was impossaible to dance to not really rythmic in the sence that we tend to think of techno or house,,,in a way it reminded me of hard house in the fact that it was nearly impossible to dance to it not much funk to it not music groove to it...whats the word cold sterile souless so to speak... that was my one experince with prog house but then again that was also nearly 7 years ago now... Im sure alot of it has change... |

his production is lame IMO
and his track selection is so-so. I've seen him play a good set, and I've seen him play a BAAAAAAAD set I guess it all depends on how much blow he's done that night |

sven vath is awesome cause he'll eat a few e's during his set and puke in the booth.
now if that's not rock and roll, i don't know what is. |
