I need help with recording.

Right now my set up consists of me using my SU-700 as a sampler to edit all my loops, composed loops, etc from my ER-1, EA-1, K4 and various sample cds. Now don't tell me to stop using the SU-700 to edit samples...cos i perfer the hands on approach, than using kontact. I despise the method of the onboard Sequencer in the SU-700, cos it all goes by ear and not eyes...i like to fucking see what i am doing. Now i do not as of yet have the expansion ASIO board for the SU-700. Nor the zip drive...so right now to save my tracks it requires about 15 floppy disks. Loading those 15 disks makes me not want to work on music at all. Now what i really need help with is, is there some way to put all the samples i edit on the SU-700 onto my computer to lay out with kontact in Cubase sx...so i can see what i am doing. Now another problem is conversion...I need to convert the files, because my SU-700 records all the information it DAT...now how in the fuck do i get this into a fucking wav. If you wanna hear my tracks, help me with this problem, and ill have em up in the next 2 weeks.

any suggestions will be appreciated

thanking you in advance,

the management.

being the gear whore i am
I looked into it
and here'S what igots...

> a) no SCSI transfer between PC and SU700
> b) no Standard MIDI sample dump between SU700 and any device w/ MIDI
>sample dump capabilities

apparently what u seek is almost umpossible
i got this very geeky page of a guy trying
desperately to do what u want

I have been playing with a Yamaha SU700 phrase sampler recently. (For those not in the know, that's a blue box with a number of pads and knobs which can play back sounds and loops.) One thing which I've noticed about the device is the minor things that were left out. A glaring example is its MIDI implementation; the device can be controlled from an external keyboard, but ignores note numbers, making it impossible to control a sample's pitch with the keyboard. It would not have been at all hard to make it play a sample at a different pitch depending on which note was played, and it would have made the unit a lot more useful. The SU700 does not support MIDI sample dump either. As for SCSI, the implementation is somewhat brain-damaged; apart from being very slow (apparently the device's CPU does all the work), it only supports one SCSI device at a time, doesn't support all standard devices (ZIP drives work; ORB drives don't), and you cannot connect it to a computer via SCSI. Also, SCSI disks are written in a proprietary format, which means you can't use them to transfer files to/from your computer. In fact, the only way to transfer samples (without resampling, that is) is to shlep them across on MSDOS-formatted floppy disks, which of course doesn't work for anything over 1.4Mb.

I got the impression that some overworked engineers at Yamaha designed everything from scratch, cutting corners to make the deadline. Why couldn't they just base the device's OS on Linux or QNX or something with working SCSI and file systems which other machines can actually read?

it sounds like you'd have to actually record all of your sounds manually, like playback and record onto your computer if you wanted to be able to sequence them, cause it doesn't sound like the SU700 has a very helpfull easy to use interface, which sucks...

and i know your problem with the floppy disks, the MPC i use doesn't have an internal zip drive, and my external zip drive doesn't have the proper SCSI wire to connect them, thus i'm stuck with lots and lots of floppy disks, bastards

like quoi le fuck...i love this device for cutting, snipping and tucking...but what the fuck. Yo if i cant do shit im gettig myself another sampler...fuck that pisses me off...after like a year of learning the in's and out;s of hal...mother fucker.

MPC IS THE SHIT
check out the Roland MV-8000 something pretty damn sweet too

but those are all really expensive, i'd say look for a program that reads .dat first and if worse comes to worse...
