Bizarre, off-season strike at LaRonde MONTREAL - In an apparent nod to the absurdist in all of us, blue-collar workers at Montreal amusement park LaRonde have gone on strike—even though the facility is closed for the winter. LaRonde: closed for the season anyway The striking union represents about 600 LaRonde maintenance and security workers during the summer, but only five permanent employees during the off-season. The strike caught LaRonde management by surprise. "Well, obviously the impact is minimal since LaRonde is not operating at the time being," said LaRonde public relations manager Anne-Marie Desautels. "There is no impact at LaRonde at this point." She said the only inconvenience the strike may cause is forcing the facility's skeleton staff to perform minor office tasks such as sweeping up around their desks. Desautels said the strike may be part of a strategy on the union's part, but added that she's not sure what the strategy is. The union said in a written statement that it wants to speed up contract talks. |
