| Hey all, I have this project to do for computer class. It consists of building a dream PC and a dream Mac, oriented towards whatever we're into (a/v production in my case). The dream PC is compleated but I'd like some help building a kick ass Mac on paper. |

| the dream mac should be monkey powered |

| dream mac = go to apples's site and find the most expensive stuff on there (well it's all expensive but look for the highest price for say.. a g5 tower, and max out all the options...) |

| yeah.. cause you can't actually 'build' a mac the way you can build a pc. |
|

| yeah and they have a funny tradition of pairing their high-end systems with very average video cards... |

| thats ok i wasnt planning on including a consumer video card :p |

| Wow, for someone who's been reading [ HardOCP.com ] you seem to not have been taking any notes or reading this week. The P4EE is out for one, with 2megs of L2 Cache on it, and either way the regular athlonXP's are smoking the P4s.
and wtf are you cooling it with!? At least get water cooling or a peltier for it. |

| I don't really give a shit :P
I asked yous about the Mac, im happy with my PC design. |

| ok, few things:
-Fax modem? common, who uses modems any more..?
-100Mbit Ethernet? what happend to gigabit?
-CD-ROM? uhh, at least go with DVD-ROM if your getting a regular drive (not burner)
-Displays, why go with 18 inchers, go get two Apply Cinema Displays, 23" each.. dead sexy too.
mind you adding two 23" cinema displays will jack up the price like $6000... |

| You people either can't read or are just stupid. I asked you for help with a mac. |

| get a powerbook - then you have a portable studio! |

| We can read, we're just puzzeled as to why your choice for a "powere" PC is so shitty. Fuck, your motherboard of choice is KNOWN for having a shitty southbridge and a low-quality RAID controller on it. |

| I always knew ravewave was far from being a good technology ressource. This is another fine example. |

| There are really two major things that bother me with the board, and they both center around the southbridge selection. ASUS chose to implement the board with the ICH5 southbridge rather than the ICH5R southbridge to save on board costs. The major difference is that the ICH5R implements hardware raid for the connected ports. ASUS instead chose to use the Promise base controller for their RAID implementation. Don’t get me wrong, the Promise solution is a good one with the exception of the write issue and the device driver reload required when switching between RAID and IDE modes. All in all though, the integrated Intel ICH5R based solution is better both performance wise and in device driver ease of use. Check out the performance numbers for yourself from our ABIT IC7-G or Intel D875PBZ reviews. The other southbridge related issue is the choice of the integrated Gigabit Ethernet controller. ASUS chose to go with a 3Com based solution that gets routed through the PCI bus, rather than use the in-built Intel Gigabit Ethernet solution. The Intel solution is faster due to its use of a proprietary bus, rather than using the PCI bus as the 3Com solution does.
The only good thing going with that MB is the 800Mhz FSB, but your cooling fan of choice will make you need to underclock your computer to make it run stable. |

| Ok dream mac
get the dual G5 with the optional terabit drive you find in the tech specks here:
get a Mini dv deck to go with that and a dual monitor setup with a plasma screan for the firewire playback. Don't forget the nice speaker a wacome tablet for drawing and a firewire 2 drive for sharing your stuff. don't forget to fill the one 133MHz, 64-bit slot and two 100MHz, 64-bit slots. And if your fealing adventeurus findout if you can add a digital beta deck! |
