In an attempt to ruin network testing and anti-spam efforts, VeriSign has setup their networks so that any time you attempt to goto a URL that does not exist, you goto their search engine instead.

Thats right, this technically means every single domain you can think of, actually exists now.

Consequences:

Computer illiterate people know when there is an error. A browser will display information that scares them and they think to themselves "I typed in that address wrong!" and double checks. No more. Computer illiterate users will be brought to a search engine run by verisign, and they will figure all is good. Companies WILL lose business as a result. It's garaunteed.

The anti-spam measures will fail since one of the most important anti-spam measure is to check the validity of the domain. Now that every domain exists, every domain will be valid.

Many times, email addresses are checked for validity before emails are sent out. This will cease to be a viable option.

And finally, its downright annoying. Ever goto a website you thought existed and get bombarded with Bonzai Buddy/GAIN install prompts, X10 popups, and 20 billion topics to search from?

Now, EVERY wrong URL you type in will be one of those sites.

what do you mean "goes".. they've been evil for years.

they actually convinced me that my [ djneoform.com ] domain was expiring soon and i ended up renewing it with them 5 months before it was set to expire.

they just did a whois with my info and bugged me with 7 letters with a freakin count down till my domain expired.

that really pissed me off once i realized i had not originally been signed with them.

VeriSign responds to ICANN and basically says “blow me” and says they will appoint their own people to look into the matter.

Stand back, this stuff should get good.
