Humans are able to learn because we have core code that gives us this ability.

Same applies for computers.

Here
lets try it this way.

Humans have a brain
Computers don't. Humans have to program that brain instead.

The key word is GENERIC. You do web programing, you should know the terms scalability and portability. What better way to achieve those two goals then to make a system that can adapt on its own?

fred i'm quite capable of grasping the subject, especially since i know quite a bit about programming and computers..

the human brain works so very differently then a computer does that there is no way a computer will ever be able to emulate it.

the human brain does not work on logic alone, a computer does.

you're trying to say painting an apple orange will make it so.

you're talking aritifical intelligence
not artificial humanity

there is a massive difference

True AI might not be possible with our current microprocessor based computers but I wouldn't rule it out with dna bases systems.

They already have dna based computers that can play tic-tac-toe. Dna systems have the potential of being faster than current technology by several orders of magnitude. If we have mapped the human brain (a daunting and long task in itself), I wouldn't rule out that we could simulate a brain with a computer.

People thought we would never fly or go to the moon, but we did. Few people 50 years ago could have fathomed the internet, but it happened. Unless there is clear proof something is impossible, never say never.

heh, the current biological computers that have been created have an extremely high error rate, something along the lines of 96% accuracy, which is completely useless if actually put to genreal use.

can a computer be self aware? yes

can a computer be intelligent? yes

can a computer posess knowledge? yes

can a computer have emotion? undecided, but why not?

the brain is basically a massively parallel computer.

Like a giant beowulf cluster.

heh, and by self aware you mean it knows how to display it's make and model number right?

you say computers can do all that.. mind giving me a bit of an explination as to how it can actually do so, with specific details?

calling computers knowledgable is merely drumming up the fact that they store and read information..

computers are just calculators.. they add ones and zeros, that's all.

this is an interesting thread

considering that intelligence doesn't require emotion, AI is possible

if we base intelligence on learning through experience, the ability to think freely and coming to our own conclusions, why can't we program a computer to do these things?

We can. We've started already. Neoform just refuses to accept it because he thinks a program can't modify it's own code to get better.

Hence my mentioning polymorphic viruses.

this is what you do not seem to understand since you aren't a programmer..

for a virus to be able to modify it's code you have to teach it how to program, and not only that you need to show it how to program well as well as know WHAT to program.. what you're talking about is so abstract that it would take a team of geniuses to make..

and thing is, in the end the program would still merely be a reflection of what the programmer told it to do.. it's code tells it to make new code, so? hows that any different then MS's autoupdate? the system checks for certain variables, then it updates it's code based on this and....... ?

READ UP ON POLYMORPHISM!

Fuck.

Just because you know PHP doesn't mean you know absolutely everything there is to know about computers inside-out.

Fuck, you're even saying that quantum computers don't exist and that if they did they'd be useless.

Hey, while I'm at it, did you know that AFTER star trek: The Next Generation started airing, that scientists decided to try and figgure out how to use anti-matter as fuel and they've succeded? Obviously, it came from science fiction first, so it MUST be impossible. Just like robots. Robots totaly don't exist and robotics are just a big conspiracy to make people look stupid for being gullible.

I hate it when people respond to arguments like this. There are geniuses out there and it wouldn't be unfathomable to have a team of them working on such a project. Also all it would take is one team to succeed, once there is an AI out there that can improve itself it would likely be able to create more copies of itself.

Just because something sounds "too hard" doesn't mean it's impossible, there are people out there a hell of a lot smarter than us.
