Well things are all weird and fucked up.. The letter I got is from a lawyer saying that I owe that much and if it's not payed in 10 days a collection agency will come.. I call the lawyer to tell them there's a fuckup, I only had an internet account in my name, never a phone, so they tell me that it might be a mistake on Bell's part and to call them.. I call Bell, give them my reference number, but it doesn't come up with anything in their system.. on the other hand, looking up my name comes up that I owe them something back for the internet, but it's way off from what I told them the letter says I owe, and since I can't remember the old address or phone number, I can't prove I'm who I say I am so they won't give me any information.

It's fucking retarded as hell. The only thing I can think of is that someone is trying to scam me, and doing a damn good job of making shit out to be legit in the form of the letter from the lawyer. Bell gave me another number to call, but by the time I got off the phone with them it was past 5pm so the place was closed.

If what I *think* is going on is what is actually going on, when I signed up to get the internet at my old place, the landlord used my info that I gave him for the lease to also sign up the phone in my name, despite it being "included in the rent", and then he didn't pay it and I've got this shit to deal with now.

The only account I've ever had with Bell is for Sympatico, that was payed with a credit card every month.. the only thing I could think of is I might not have returned the modem, but that's not gonna be near 750$ (Bell even says that's not the amount I owe them, but that they can't tell me since I can't remember the address or phone number.. fucking GAY)
I'm feeling like a drama magnet right now..

Unless you own over 20,000$ of stuff, they can't take anything from you...

I would not pay it...
Tell the collection agency to bring you to court, they won't...

*cough* still a huge burden to have listed on a credit report, regardless of whether it's true or not. :/

... no proof of those lease terms, i.e. included phone line? hope you can manage to retrace your old address, that'd be the first step to proving your innocence. i'm pretty sure you MUST've left some proof of residence somewhere during that period.

and dude, not being able to get the actual amount from Bell is stupid. aren't THEY the ones hiring the collection agency? how can those numbers not match?

g'luck, pretty shitty situation to be in. i say have THEM prove you exactly why you owe them money. who would you have called long-distance anyway? :/

...
PS. shitty all the more since (though I generalize) Bell's CSRs are employed on their skills as retards alone.
I'm feeling 1up right now..

Well the old address is a matter of Google Earth, didn't think of it at the time.. just Streetview to the place and that'll get me the address.. As for leaving some sort of proof of residence, yeah there's got to be some, but very, very little..

part of the whole problem with this bullshit is that I was helping the landlord (a friend at the time) out with some shit for how he wanted to rent the place out..

he wanted to rent out individual rooms, but to do that you have to get the Regie to inspect the place, and it was in horrible conditions, so to help him out on that I signed a lease for the whole place so that he only had to declare one tenant and didn't need to get the place inspected, but he also never gave me a copy of the leases, because I could have used it to get the Regie on his ass to make the place a little more livable (had to wear winter jackets/multiple pants indoors in winter or freeze to death - at various spots all over the appartment there were cracks at the base of the walls that you could pretty much look directly outside, so there was constantly a winter breeze going through the place, not to mention that the 'included fridge' worked for about a month, and then broke down for about 6 and he never replaced it - couldn't even keep milk in the freezer.. And the pipe from the upstairs neighbor's toilet was broken, so every time he flushed, the pissy/shitty water would leak down onto our toilet - took easily over 4 months to get that fixed..)

The whole thing was a major clusterfuck. And with how Bell worked at the time, I was paying the internet with my credit card, so they never mailed any bills for that, just took the monthly deductions.. Even when I tried to get on welfare, he didn't want to give me a copy of the lease, didn't want to sign a paper from Welfare saying I lived there, and outright told the case worker that I hadn't lived in the apartment for more than a couple of months (when it was close to a year I'd lived there).

and dude, not being able to get the actual amount from Bell is stupid. aren't THEY the ones hiring the collection agency? how can those numbers not match?

Yeah, it's fucking retarded.. part of me is thinking someone is trying to scam me into just giving them a large chunk of cash by scaring me into thinking a collection agency is going to come after me, but a few things in this whole bullshit make me think that the landlord most probably used the info I filled out for him to set up a phone line in my name that he ended up not paying or running up the bill on and ditching.
I'm feeling like a drama magnet right now..

I've already been into something like that about two years ago. Someone was using my phoneline via my PC to make long distance calls and my mom was getting freaking expensive long distance fees. I'm with Sympatico Bell for Internet, so Internet, phone and Bell Express Vue are all kinda linked together. My mom never paid these fees, but then it jumped to 300-500$ fees and we started investigating, calling Bell and all the fucking processes. During that time, Bell stopped our Express Vue access because mom wasn't paying the fees. It's a chance we didn't have to pay because we discovered it was some form of hack.

The only solution we found is to ask Bell to block all in/out long distance calls and we're now using a special number with Distributel to make long distance calls. It's even cheaper that way so that hack finally got us something good.

I'll look for info. I wish you good luck.
I'm feeling like playing sega genesis right now..

Wow, yeah, über-sketchy situation :/
Depending on how long ago that was, there are probably still records of those bills somewhere. Especially since it's unpaid.
Do you remember what kinda personal info you gave that guy?

yeah, on top of what was on the official lease papers, he had me fill out a whole thing as a 'just in case' form with everything; name, birthday, parent's names and contact info, SS number ("for taxes"), so it's entirely possible (and really wouldn't be surprising considering the amount of people he lied to and fucked over at the time) that my info was used fraudulently.
