It depends on how "legit" the collection agency is. Big buisnesses can and will get the legal rights to walk into your house and take whatever they deem is worth what you owe. Like, if you owe say 600$, they can and will simply walk in and take your TV, your computer, your sofa and your bed, and if you so much as lift a finger you will get arrested. Smaller collection agencies will go and beat the shit out of someone or break bones if they get a debt that isn't paied back with interest exactly when they want it, because they don't have the "power" and backing to just walk in and take what they want, and also because the people offering this service, while it may be registered as a legit buisness, don't neceseraly operate with all the laws they should, just like some stors hire people to work under the table once in a while.

yeah illegitimate collection agencies are pretty much like hired goons.

The legitimate ones are like "repo men".

If it's a "real" collection agency from a "big" reputable company, like I said, they walk in and leave you with nothing they think they can't sell back to make up for it. If you owe 600 and they figgure that a "used" wide-screen plasma TV, a "used" computer, a "used" bed, a "used" sofa, a "used" refrigerator and a "used" stove can only be sold for 600$ total (plus interest) then you're pretty fucked.

If it's a "small" nobody collection agency, they will most probably hurt you a LOT, but not enough to keep you from working, and they will be VERY strict as to how much money they want and when they want it. As in, if your 10 minutes late to give them their money, even though you have it, you WILL get the shit beat out of you because you didn't give it to them when they wanted it.

And this is why borrowing money, or getting stuff on a payment plan, is to be COMPLETELY avoided unless it's from the bank (for money) or a REALLY BIG FUCKING STORE if it's for anything from furniture to computers to apliances. Make sure it's from a BIG name that EVERYONE knows, and they will play by the book. If not... I suggest just falling limp on the first hit, they might break less if they think you go down easy.

Also, keep in mind that you don't necesarily have to own the items their taking. Say my sister owes money and they come to "collect" stuff, everything in the house is fair-game, from my computer to my mother's TV to my brother's bed. If it's in the residence where you live, it's accountable.

At work we use collection agencie's for the amounts ranging from 200$-10,000$. Our methods are purely legal and done to keep a clean reputation as a vendor and not as someone you don't want to fuck with. The extent of collection is in the hands of laywers. Then brought to court. The repo men enter the senerio.

er, if they took something that does not belong to the person their making their claim for they're liable for legal action, if someone took something from me based on someone else's debts, i'd take em to court.

Unfortunately it doesn't work that way. It's similar to police laws concerning searches. If 3 ppl live together as roommates, and the police wants to search someone's room, ANYBODY who lets them search "only their stuff" just let them in, because by consenting to any kind of search means you've given them the right to search everywhere. If they come in to search for a stolen TV and they don't have a search warant and someone lets them in anyways to "prove" to them "Look, we ain't got it!" you just gave them the permission to look between your matresses, in your drawers, in the toilet reservoir, etc., even though you could never hide a TV in there. Warants are the only thing that binds them. And in some weird way, this is similar to what collection agencies are legaly alowed to do. If they want something of value to pay back the debt you owe, they can take stuff that doesn't belong to you on the grounds that "It was there, you live there, it's yours." You can have all the bills in the world to prove someone else bought it and it was their tv/bed/whatever, even as far as it being in their room and their room being locked, it doesn't matter. You live there, it's yours.

Nah, i still see it as stealing..

i mean what happens if there's a dishwasher in your apt.. it belongs to the super, they claim it and leave.. they can't do that. that's stealing someone else's property.
