Body desecrated with bacon slices
From correspondents in London
June 3, 2003

TWO former London hospital workers have been arrested on suspicion of desecrating a Muslim woman's body by covering it with rashers of bacon while it lay in a mortuary, police said today.

The body of Habiba Mohammed, a 65-year-old grandmother, had been taken to Hillingdon Hospital mortuary in west London after she died of cancer on January 17.

It is against the Muslim religion to touch or eat pork products and detectives said they were treating the incident as a religiously or racially motivated crime.

Detective Superintendent Gordon Briggs, of London's racial and violent crime police taskforce, said: "This is an appalling and repelling crime which causes widespread concerns in the community."

Police said a 20-year-old man had been detained on May 16 in connection with the incident and bailed to reappear on June 12, while a 30-year-old man was arrested on May 19 and bailed until June 20.

A third man has also been arrested for allegedly stealing items from bodies at the same hospital mortuary.

When detectives raided the 53-year-old's home in west London they allegedly found 2000 photographs and slides of corpses.

Officers said they were also investigating the desecration of a second woman's body at the same mortuary in 1996.

The body of the white woman had pen marks on it.

Hillingdon hospital conducted an internal inquiry into the incident in 1996, but did not inform police or the woman's family.
