Cops snap the cap on spray-paint vandals gang Nine suspects identified as members of group NRK that defaced walls of métro stations and trains NATALIE ALCOBA The Gazette Friday, May 16, 2003 ADVERTISEMENT Montreal police have charged nine people with widespread spray-paint vandalism in the métro, and say they tracked them down thanks to the noms de plume the vandals left behind. Signature "tags" led police to members of NRK, considered the largest street-graffiti gang in the city, who are accused of leaving graffiti that has defaced the walls of nine métro stations and trains since June last year. The vandalism caused $250,000 in damage. "There is a silent law in (the graffiti) domain that you do not use another person's signature when you do your own graffiti," Det.-Lt. Bernard Lamothe said at a news conference yesterday. That unspoken rule helped police narrow their search. A task force has been working for more than two months in collaboration with the Montreal Transit Corp. and CP Rail, learning about the culture of graffiti tagging and questioning people associated with the underground graffiti scene. Some of the tags were paired with graffiti art posted on Web sites and chat rooms. Police say they are still investigating Internet sites that post this type of material. NRK, a play on the word "anarchy," is the most active graffiti gang in Montreal, Lamothe said . He said the accused have no criminal records and are not suspected of other criminal activity. "Most of the crime ... was mostly for the glorification of the act, making them more important and advertising that fact," Lamothe said. Police searched nine homes and confiscated dozens of photographs, albums, paint cans and home videos of spray-painters in action. Lamothe said this is the first time the force has dealt with such an organized graffiti group. In community surveys conducted by police, residents said graffiti contributed to a sense of insecurity and disorder in their neighbourhoods. That's why the police put so much effort into the vandalism investigation, Lamothe said. One of the acts of vandalism attributed to NRK occurred in the early hours of April 20 at the east-end L'Assomption and Cadillac métro stations. Transit officials say the vandals caused more than $15,000 in damage; it took 48 hours to clean up the graffiti. Montreal Transit Corp. budgets about $1.3 million a year to clean up after taggers, spokesperson Odile Paradis said . Joël Therrien, 21, Simon Poirier, 23, Éric Raymond, 23, Patrick Savard, 23, Julie Bouchard, 23, Kayvin Charrette-St.-George, 20, Marie-Élaine St.-Amour, 20, and Jean-Loïc Rodriguez, 26, are charged with 161 counts of breaking and entering, mischief and conspiracy. But it pisses me off seeing it in the metro... We have one of the cleanest metro systems in the world and it just makes it so much dirtier having ugly tags all over the walls. Cops are just doing their job. |
