For DJing, the best way to really describe what to do when using EQs is with glasses of water.

You have 9 glasses split into three sets of three - three full (left deck), three empty (master output) and three full (right deck)

each glass in a set represents a frequency range - bass, mid, high. The goal of a mix is to keep the middle 'empty' glasses full by using only the corresponding glasses from the left or right deck.

If you have a track playing from the left, the left glasses are empty and the middle glasses are full. If you want to bring in a track from the right, you have to pour some water into the glasses in the middle, but if you don't take out some of the water that's already there, you're just going to spill everything and make a huge mess.

Now yeah, it's a little more complicated than that, because physically sound waves of different frequency take up different amounts of "room" - bass is the biggest and high is the smallest, so if you've got 2 basslines playing, it'll be louder and take more room than if you had two tracks of just hihats playing.. But essentially what you want to do is constantly keep a balance between the frequencies of the two tracks while never, ever, EVER letting anything go in the red.

For everything new you put in, you should take some out of the old..

I think the best thing you can do is to record yourself mixing and take notes on what you liked and didn't like while listening to it after. Often times your so concentrated while mixing you don't necessarily pick up on the subtle errors and you certainly won't notice them in an actual party.. in the end this little exercise will go a long way to making you a much better dj.

while yes, recording yourself is the best way to hear what you're doing wrong to improve, if you have no idea what it is that sounds wrong, or why it sounds wrong, all the recording and listening isn't going to help you if you think all your EQs should be at max when you're mixing, or if you think that having it in the read means you're pushing the mixer into the level it's supposed to be at..
