Facebook haters unite! Jimmy Kimmel has declared that November 17 as National UnFriend Day, a day in which Facebook users should cut the “friend fat” and lose the unnecessary friends who keep asking you “which Harry Potter character you are.” Let's be honest—we all have Facebook friends that aren't our actual, real-life friends. Some of them you might not even know. That goes for celebs and brands too - just check out Facebook's 10 most popular celebrities, and the 10 most talked-about fashion houses. Whether it's your ex's cousin whose status updates clog up your NewsFeed or your old next door neighbor who keeps sending you invitations to beer nights (that are taking place across the country!), having peripheral acquaintances or tenuous associates as Facebook friends can get pretty annoying. (Behind the Scenes at Facebook Headquarters: NewsFeed gets a sneak peek) So Jimmy has proposed the perfect solution in an effort to pare down the excess friendage and make social networking a touch more anti-social. It's brilliant and if all Facebook users take the day seriously, we might just find ourselves back in a simpler, happier time: “Remember five years ago when no one was on Facebook and you didn't know what the guy you took high school biology with was having for lunch? Remember how that was fine? Let's go back to that," Kimmel says. Amen, Jimmy. | |
