By Daily Mail Reporter Some might say they are bananas - but almost 600 people dressed in gorilla suits were running wild in London yesterday.They were taking part in a race along the Thames to raise money for the Great Gorilla Organisation - a charity dedicated to the endangered primate's conservation. Around 700 people took part - that is the same number of mountain gorillas left in the wild across the world. Conservationist and television presenter Bill Oddie fired the starting pistol for the 4.3 mile (7km) Great Gorilla Run, which is now in its seventh year. Oddie said: 'There are four species of gorillas and all four are certifiably endangered. 'You would have to genuinely be the biggest killjoy not to go bananas for conservation and support hundreds of daft looking gorillas running around London.' The GGO said the fancy dress run had raised £150,000 - but that could rise to £250,000 when sponsorship ends in November.The route started at Minster Court and took in the City, Tower Bridge and Tate Modern.The Great Gorilla Organisation said the runners had managed to raise £150,000 to save the endangered primates.
