since decades the US army have a #1 general big important rule: no proselytizing! many army people are still agreeing w/ that seeing the danger of a perceived holly war...

if someone would have told me this story i wouldn't have believe it! what's happening here!? and some people do not see any problem in that matter///

i don't want to put all American Christian in the same basket but i am very very disgusted by that:

if the fucking government want to give billion in contract to private company for their guns they have to make sure that this stuff do not happen!!!

and now the representative of the army are saying they are doing a recall and it will take a YEAR!!! haha i bet if it would be communist inscription that would happen really faster bhahaha

arrrggg im soooo angry! at least this guy Micheal Weinstein is doing someting about it...
I'm feeling hitched right now..

well said like that.. no it's far to be a "shocker" that some extremist religious would make things worse...

what is very shocking is that a secular public government funds these guns.

lol the government will only really be secular when it's run/populated by people who are secular!

The figures aren't recent (2005-2006) but: [ www.adherents.com ]

How could anyone really believe that a government run by people of ANY religious affiliation be truly secular? Everyone has their own agenda, influenced by their beliefs, and if their beliefs are religious... well... 2+2=4

That is so ironic. Religions preach peace but they are inherently warlike anyway since it's a tribal instinct to adhere to a dogma and view those who do not share it as a threat or subjects to "save".

I don't understand the concept of "save" in religion @__@
save from what?

Since we are social, we must respect our tribe/clan/village else it's chaos everywhere and society doesn't work. Every social species has their rules, we're no exception.
Religion has incorporated that aspect into its guidelines. That's why most of them promote peace and respect.

But then comes power-hungry dudes. And clash of cultures. Fear of unknown.
And there's where everything fails ;)
Also, well, the fact that religions are based on something illogical... You cannot prove that God exists, so you can say anything. Easy to manipulate people with that, and of course, some people use it to their advantage.

well religion is a meme like any other idea that spreads like a desease. The concept of saving means converting people, thus spreading the religion/meme beyond the current boudaries, "infecting" others to bring uniformity of ideas. It's as if the aim was to make everyone the same in order to reduce conflict, but its also instinctual to cling to your established ideas and fight for them unless your survival (among other things) improves by adopting a different ideology.
I'm feeling without mojo right now..

nah. you are generalizing.

firstly, what is the "whole idea of religion" ?

what if my religion was based on worshipping a God of War - like Ares/Mars was worshipped in Greco-Roman times?

or the original Thugs who used to roam India. The "Thuggee" (thug = "deceiver") were members of a cult devoted to the goddess Kali. They would befriend travellers in remote areas, and then strangle them to death when their guard was down. They believed they were doing the bidding of their goddess who then feasted on the bodies of their victims..

I'm sure some of these Thuggee considered themselves deeply religious.

or what about Hindus who are born as "untouchables" or "outcastes" in India.. or, even worse, a subgroup called "unseeables" ...who are supposed to only come out at night so nobody has to look at them

and dont these Abrahamic religions believe in eternal paradise or eternal hellfire? doesn't sound very egalitarian to me.

I think fighting and discrimination are unfortunately time-honoured traditions of the human race. We've evolved from a line of highly social predatory apes. Historically, people look out for their family first, friends second... and potentially prey on or exploit the rest.

A lot of it depends on circumstance, but no matter how "civilized" people might appear to be, those predatory instincts are definitely not far below the surface. If anything, they have to be masked and muzzled by laws and religious scriptures.

People can sometimes live in harmony, so long as there is no competition for resources.. once there is a shortage, they are all too willing to go raid, rape and pillage a neighbouring community in order to maintain their desired lifestyle

So, many religions, however lofty their professed ideals, are often nothing more than a tool used to maintain the staus quo. A way for the elite to control the unruly masses. I'm sorry but when you are living in a dog-eat-dog world, the meek don't inherit jack shit.

i think you can be religious and secular.

there is so many different religions practiced in the USA a need for a secular society is primal to its just functioning.

freedom of religion can only be reached in a secular society.

many people in Canada are religious and take for granted their highly secular politic society but yet very influenced by Christianity and in Quebec, Catholicism.

the extremist Christians or extremist tea party people represent a small part of the religion spectrum.but god they are loud! :(

Tea party? Do you mean Boston Tea Party, when they threw all the tea in Atlantic? I thought it was political, not religious... Against English colonialism and taxation.
//on another point... not cool, wasting all that good tea! >__<

***It's as if the aim was to make everyone the same in order to reduce conflict***

Yah, but I find it a bit illogical...
Religions are linked to one particuliar culture, environment, and wouldn't work in some other place. For example, I wouldn't like to see Jewish people in 1500's Québec... With all their food restrictions, they would've starved to death or something... Climate is harder here, you eat whatever you can, especially in winter. ;)

And all Abrahamic religions come from Middle East... From one spot, and want to colonize the whole world? Do not want. Besides, they're highly patriarchal, which is definitively not in Québécois culture. Apparently we're matriarchal... Probably one of the reasons why Christianity didn't get too popular here. It got imposed to us for 200 years or something, but we got rid of it with la Révolution Tranquille.

I don't mind if some dude practices his religion by himself, if it doesn't harm anyone, but I hate people who impose beliefs on others. It's like, colonialism of the brain.
