This is not the point of that school. It's teaching you how to use a sampler or a synthetiser, but only cause they prepare you to be a sond-tech in a studio, and it would be stupid to don't know anything about that, working with musicians. By the way I'm giving Ableton lessons ;) [ montreal.kijiji.ca ]

Ya avoid trebas and musitechnic like the plague. Your better off investing your 15000$ in equipment then figuring out how to use it. However if you really want to go that route there is Vanier. It's less expensive and I heard it's as good if not better then Trebas and friends.
I'm gonna add a vote for electroacoustics in University. I just finished my first year, and holy shit did I learn a lot. Only thing is though they don't teach you how to use software and how to make sick basslines. But trust me you can figure that out on your own. What it comes down to is your passion and will to keep trying. Producing music is not exactly "fun". It takes a lot of time and practice + many many hours of isolation and late late nights. Fuck I'm waiting for a track to bounce to audio as we speak. In the end it comes down to your own will to succeed and study. Shit most of the info on how to produce "techno" music is already widely available on the internet. There are even youtube video instructions. Honestly, and yes that's pretext to say something hurtful; but if you haven't been on your computer day and night researching and trying shit out then you should probably keep music as a hobby.

man I think before you even embark upon learning how to produce electronic music, you should first learn the basics of how to use an internet browser and search engine
a simple copy paste of "electroacoustics in University" in my handy google search bar, comes up with a plethora of info [ www.google.com ]

Learning the basics of music could definitely help too..
- Theory - Scales - Piano - Reading music, etc. In a music program (Cegep or University), you would also have courses to help you learn how to read scores and how to compose songs with more than a 2-3 instruments. But you'd need to play a "standard" instrument in order to get in. 10 years ago I contacted a few music teachers in Cegeps to see if I could get in as an "electronic musician". I got a positive response at Cegep St-Laurent but the direction said no at the last minute mainly because of budget and copyrights!? You should check it out though.. 10 years is a long time and hopefully things have changed ;)

I'm pretty sure that most people here that bitch against sound school would have took thrice the time to learn the stuff on their own. Sure the cost is really hyped for what you get. I think most of these courses worth 1/2 the price of what they charge. Also, please note that Drummondville CEGEP gives the SAME program as Musitechnic for the price of a CEGEP course.
You'll need dig deeper than "just learning techno" There's a whole world of acoustics and physics principles underneath that you have to acknowledge before you "just learn techno". If you don't want to learn more than techno, just read some books. A MURDOCK_ROCK (why did you banned him?) said, there are TONS of tutorials available if you want to learn about softwares and basic principles. Now, start reading (explaination about synthesis and shits by synth guru Rob Hordijk): [ www.xs4all.nl ]

it's not about software AT ALL
...software is 0.1% of the equation An old+experienced studio engineer that has never used a piece of software before will do a much better job with it than someone that knows the software's manual by heart. It's about training your ears and understanding "mixing". Obviously, music theory comes into play too, but some people don't know any theory and make masterpieces (I guess it depends how musical you are)... I was told by many established engineers that sound engineering school isn't useful for EDM production. You're better off learning from EDM engineers. Sound engineering school is usually focused on recording techniques and mixing techniques, which can be useful, but probably not worth the money. |
