The more I come across discussions among music lovers and musicians, the more often a problem about how to name sound, music genre, arises. Because we have to name, therefore define. Define: origins, influences, roots or artistic approach, etc.

The problem with definitions, through words and therefore names, is that it's trying to fix in time (and space?) something ever evolving like music. It has practical uses but never to the musician himself. You don't need to spell out what you are listening to. neither when you are writing, unless you want to reproduce generic music with the same proprieties.

From that point, who needs to argue if "that" comes more from "there" than "there"? As music influences people that makes music that influences people that makes music, without ever naming it. But you still need to be able to talk about it, or do we?

As an example, the hyped dubstep name doesnt really mean anything anymore, except for the wobbles. And even there, more conservative ppl will disagree over that main element...
And that, happily, comes when you have a consensus.
That glitch-hop scene has none and its ridiculous how many names there is for that sound.
Is it just a dj/melomaniacs/musician issue?
Why do I get confused when I see squarepusher in the same section as david guetta labeled under techno @ archambault?
I am confused.
I'm feeling like tweaking that drum kit right now..

There's a need for naming/labelling/classifying music in order to facilitate discussion, exchange, and sale, among others. Such names can change in time, as you said, and also in space (geographically), and even according to subculture/trend/people... which is why two people in the same town may be calling a genre differently.

There's also the problem of how people classify, but it's another thing: it can come from a sloppy definition of a genre, or simply from the fact that everybody doesn't listen to music the same way.
For some people, having a wobble in a hardtechno track could make it "dubstep"; in the same fashion, having a blast beat on drums automatically means "black or death metal" to some people. This use of metonymy is probably the most common source of "errors" by us, human beings, would it be in our own brain's classification process or in the words we express (for anything, not only music). At the same time, this is somehow our trademark :) "that's what makes us humans", some might say :P

For example, you said that wobbles is what makes a tune "dubstep"; I disagree with that, since there were no wobbles at all in the first years of dubstep. Moreover there are still many "dubstep" tracks that do not use wobbles at all! Dubstep can be ambient, minimal, reggae, tribal, abstract, uk garage, etc. and never use any wobble.

As for labelling squarepusher and david guetta as "techno": this is simply a coarse level of classification. At the top you have "music", then you can have "jazz" or "reggae" or "classical" or rock"; at this same level, electronic music is often called "techno" or "electronic"... which you could divide in dozens of genres, over and over :) Then again, is david guetta house or techno or club or...? Is squarepusher IDM or braindance or electronica or experimental or...?
I'm feeling at home! right now..

Ha the problem is that everyone wants to pretend there doing something new by giving it there own pet term. Think of how many names we have for 4 to the floor type dance music between 120 - 160 bpm.

Then people like to pretend there cool by having super restrictive and elitist taste in music, so they can shun others that listen to lesser forms of music.

So screw it, listen to what you like, it's all edm in the end.
I'm feeling bad chemistry right now..

settle down children, settle down,

as for names for music ????

i guess it's all part of the "historical morphology" of the music

it was stupid ten years ago, it's stupid now.

i guess i think about it more in terms of artists rather than genre, places however do have 'sounds' like 'detroit techno'...

wtv floats your boat...

cowbellstep?

interesting discussion though....

Too much naming can lead to ultrafragmentation of genres, no naming can lead to gross generalization of a genre... balance is key... I like whats happening with dubstep where instead of finding specific names and piegeonholing every single tune... they just find a couple of terms to describe it...

this tune is filthy distorted dubstep, this tune is deep sub bass dubstep, this tune is a mix of this and that and this... it doesnt stop people from shunning away certain forms of this genre but at least when you first step into the genre there are no clear boundries and it's a bit more open and it kinda forces you to do a bit of research to understand that there is a lot of different things going on... it also gets producers to open up and try to move away from clichés without their stuff becoming completely obscure.

between this

and this

there is a world of difference... but I guess what makes dubstep what it is, is more a question of production practices and culture
I'm feeling lovely right now..

Where you can truly find dub elements in the first releases of digital mystyks/ tempa. and lets just think about the dub electro coming "exclusively"( correct me if I'm wrong) from France, where they won't give up the name the originally picked for the genre.

I agree, but then, what IS dubstep? Is it really what we want it to be, individually?

I cant stop thinking about that Fulgeance guy who came in march. we were talking about that "lowclub" labeling of his. And as he explained in a interview, he was so sick of trying to label the music he was doing that he just invented a name for his own. that simple.
Or that first edIT's track on Certified Air Raid Material when he simply let the album begins when he is asked to explain what kind of music he is doing.

If people familiarize themselves with the artists writing the tracks rather than trying to classify several artists into a broad category I'm sure they'll start to have a better idea of exactly what to expect... inevitably you'll have all sorts of idiosyncrasies that are particular to one producer's sound, and then broader definitions that cover all the artists on one particular label, but the broader category covering all dubstep tracks etc follows a loose formula that is like the Platonic form of "dubstep".

It's like showing a chair to a person who has no familiarity with chairs and trying to get them to point out in a room full of chairs, benches, stools, and recliners which ones are chairs. They go "they're all fucking chairs, I don't like fucking chairs, I've got through my whole life without these things, and based on that shitty one you showed me the other day I don't think I need to sit down ever ok, besides I've been fine with this here wooden log for ages and I don't like how chairs are becoming more popular than logs". Well it's sort of like that. I think.

Ok I think I can elaborate on what I was saying about chairs. Some people have logs, some stools, others can't tell the difference between a log and a stool, but they know that they can sit on either of them, and it may or may not be comfortable.
