Hi, it's Erik again with "My Two Cents".
I really think everyone should chill and let the movie come out so that you have the 1.5 hours to 2 hours of content to criticize rather than just hearsay. Supposing that all your criticisms lead to Gnio working away in the editing room and turning out something that doesn't seem as pederast... then what? You'll look like fools, you'll have nothing to say anymore. Wait for it to become a bigger problem - ie wait for it to fail, not make any money, and basically wind up as a wart in the NFB's history. It's going to be way more epic after the release if he gets sued or otherwise criticized than it could ever be if the trailer is all we're slamming. As for the... what was the term... ephebophilia shown in the film, what can you do? There's a website called tinyangels that is way worse, the girls are actually naked - no... don't go there, anybody. I don't even know why I know about that site. What Gnio is doing isn't peer porn but no doubt there are going to be peers of the teens shown in the film who will find the cinematography attractive; however given that there's some lecherous dickweed behind the camera, you know that the release of the film will lead to backlash. Yet what will it do? Larry Clark made Kids, went on to do the incredibly controversial films Ken Park and Wassup Rockers, which are both pretty amazing films which hypersexualize teenagers. The difference between Clark and "gnio" is pretty huge though. First of all, Clark's cinematography was and still is groundbreaking, as is the subject matter. He cast sexually-active youth in his films, teenagers who consented entirely and were paid for their performances. He tried to convey an honest image of teenage sexuality in every one of these films and in his photography. The quality of his art makes the situation less cut-and-dry. Whether or not he is a pederast is sort of irrelevant in the context of what is being documented and how, as well as Clark's articulate nature, which has kept him from being completely banned, although Ken Park apparently got an X-rating and raised quite a stir. It's basically a teenage skater dude fucking his asian girlfriend, the whole movie. I don't think that the director of Pola has the credentials to be able to defend himself against criticism of the sort Clark faced, nor that he has thought through his reasons for documenting this. I also doubt that the film will get any attention due to the fact that it is documenting the leftovers of an aesthetic that already has broken and dissipated. The documentaries such as "Raver Bathroom", based largely in Toronto during the mega-uber-super-giganto-rave phase of the late '90s focused more on the excessive size of these events, the debauchery of the bathroom (the most popular hangout at a rave, because you can actually see the sludge you're treading through and lift your phat pants above it, dry off a corner not covered in condensation, and try to snort drugs before they get soaked), and were documenting an end of an era, which these sort of events quite literally were. Soon afterwards there was an inquest on the death of a raver at a Hullabulloo (HHC rave) in Toronto that led to strict legislation, namely a requirement to have trained security, buildings that met code, and plenty of other restrictions that made the arena-sized rave no longer tenable. There was something to document back then because it was a phenomenon; read: it was still something attracting thousands, rather than the puny turnouts documented in Pola. So... TL;DR: Let the film release happen, then tear it to shreds. If it's a voyeuristic "ephebophiliac" piece of shit, there will be a reaction publicly, and he'll get his.
I'm feeling dorksided! right now.. |

Larry Clark used to come to my work back in the days.. the guy's cool even tho it is true he must be near 50 and look himself like a skater teen, his art is totally legit. he is a master photographer and many great directors have been inspired by his stuff.. not my fav but i own about evrything he did, it's totally have its place in a collection! :) Update » Holly_Golightly wrote on Mon Nov 9, 2009 @ 9:47am oh and nathan..my friend.. just wanted to note that it isn't true.. documentary don't need to be objective. and many great and famous documentary were involving the film maker as well..
think about the cinema-verite genre so popular in Quebec, France and many other countries.. and also think about documentaries made by Anne-Claire Poirier! documentary is one of my favorite genre. it is a unknown genre by the masses. it is very less limiting then what people might generally think..

You seen his hilarious cameo in Last Days? I cracked up when I saw that, makes me wonder if Von Trier was trying to make fun of Cobain.

As some one who works in a scene that is in a very conservative city where 'Rave' is consider one of /those/ four letter words I wouldn't let it worry you too much.
The only that needs to be done to avoid the negative stigma that may be caused is for the promoters to tighten up their security a bit and keep a closer eye on patrons. We ran into some serious trouble a few years back involving a novice promoter letting kids that were way too young to be at parties into them (a rave is no place for an unsupervised 10 yr old). Needless to say a kid got a hold of something they shouldn't have and the parents caused a large up roar. The promoter responsible failed and went out of business. However the other promoters int he scene banded together and actually turned the bad press into an opportunity by holding a 'rave' event that was open to the public. Surprisingly there were a lot of 'rave parents' and media in attendance, all of whom realized that raves weren't the devil and in our city it was safer for an underaged person to attend an all ages rave than go to an all ages nightclub. Since then they've been trying to shut down the all ages night clubs and leaving raves alone...then again bad things actually happen at the night clubs. Moral: There will always be forces working against alternative/underground cultures and there will always be idiots looking to ruin every one's fun simply because said idiot does not understand why we find it fun. Also the movie will most likely fail if it's relying solely on 'kiddie porn' to make it's point...most people find that sort of exploitation more offensive than the drugs and the movies actual point. Also if you could find a strong promoter that could actually relate and discuss matters with the public that would help greatly...though there seems to be a horrid lack of promoters for some reason :( :( :( |
