Ok, I'm having some trouble with drums.. (well at least I think I am, might sound fine to everyone else..)

The drums sound too centered.. wouldn't be a problem for the kicks, but it's mainly the snares and hats that are driving me nuts.. Everything else in the tune (it's a remix) comes out wider, and listening to it on monitors it really sounds like the drums are coming from one tiny spot right in the center of the sound field.. the snares being the biggest culprit..

I've tried fucking around with reverb and can't get anything that sounds decent, but I may just not be doing it right.. Any ideas? Some other effect to pass them through/put in a send?

Ok, lol, never mind.. I can't believe how simple that was..

For the first time in ages I forgot to use my 'secret weapon' for making anything phat as all hell; Fruity Blood Overdrive on default settings.

I think I may actually finish this today!

for wider stereo effect, without phase cancellation on mono-playing devices, (like clubs) you may want to get a "doubler" with settings like L: 12 ms delay, -3 dB R: 22 ms delay, -6dB

makes your sound still in the middle, but alot wider, and minimal phase cancellation.

overdrive wont "wide" a sound =P

I'll give that a shot also..

It's the Fruity Blood Overdrive hehe, you should give it a shot.. just default settings, it's like a tube compressor and it fattens the sound.. I'd totally forgotten to put it on the drums for this, it's usually the first thing I put on, usually one on each chanel.. It's one of those 'miracle worker' effects..

blood overdrive kicks ass! it's true that it doesn't widen the sound but it gives it such a bigger badder sound.. pseudo-wide.. more like wide-load than wide :P - i put most of my snares through it.

there's an actual 'widener' in Sound-Forge too , but the sound-forge plugins are cpu hogs when used in fruity.. it's a nice touch though.

there's also the FL 'sound goodizer' you can pick up.. it works wonders, though it's more like the overdrive in that it doesn't make the sound wider, but bigger and better.. but you don't want to get addicted to using it. i don't even have it myself.. (hmmm, i should install FL8, it might already be in there)...
I'm feeling you up right now..

really not sure, but i have a feeling it's a mild overdrive with a compression set to embiggen the sound.. it may also just boost all the frequencies, like a flat EQ +1 ...

(thnx to the Simpsons for the word 'embiggen' :p )

Flat EQ + 1 = Gain +1

Dont know the plugin but sounds like compression/limiting to me.

It's their take on the BBE Sonic Maximizer (which I recomend the old version of, the new one doesn't really sound that good)

blood overdrive, it may be the only plug in which comes with FL that i really like, its a distortion, heavily limited, (try it on a synth when your peak meter jumps up and down, it will always stay at the same level with it!)

soundgoodizer is a multi processing effect, it does eq, then multiband compression, then limiting.
but there is not enough control over the plugin, so i really dont like it, and compresses too much to put it on synths, id rather just use normal compression and camelphat.

the soundgoodizer is made for a "cheap mastering device"
i personally dont recommend it!

one thing i realised with the blood overdrive, is that if you start putting it on a lot of things, everything else will kind of be lost in the mix, and it you put it on everything, everything will be too distorted (can be good, depend of the style, but be aware that it will sound fruity loops's bloodoverdriveish, which can be really recognizable)

so id stick the BO on only 1 or 2 sounds in a track, only the sounds you wanna get the more punch out of.. ex: kick and snare, or lead and bass, or bass and kick, ect

but be carefull, its the same thing for a doubler, if you use it too much, your track will sound wide, but there wont be any solid stereo image anymore, everything will be delayed from one side to the other, i personally use it on vocals and lead, most of the time if i need it, otherwise il try a chorus or something.

always try to use time-effect (doubler, delay, reverb, ect) on a bus (send) channel, so you can use the same plug-in for more than 1 sound, and you can control the dry/wet more easily. and the bus summing operation will be better if you use busses than if you "insert" time effect on every chanel, and reveb will be more unified, if you use the same plug in for every sound you want reverb on!

Yeah generally that's what I do (with time-effects on a send)

What I really love the Blood Overdrive for when it comes to drums is that I can run it on a send and send all the drums partialy through and it'll pretty much level them all out while making them that much phatter.. it really gets them unified together..

I dunno wtf they did, but it's one of the best distortions.. On default settings (no boost on anything) it's like a really limited tube compressor..

I've almost got the tune ready now.. I just still gotta give the drums some more 'oomph'.. I think I need to double some of the hits and I'll be good to go..

I just listened to the 2 versions you posted, and I find it sounds like it's been put through a little overdrive and a lot of gain :)
The snare still sounds "behind", in the mix... maybe you would like a sharper and more dynamic sound for the snare, with a more punchy attack (I don't know how to do it on a computer, though). The kick could benefit from the same treatment too, although I think it needs it a little less than the snare.
There are a lot of layers and effects, which are a little too loud in the mix, in my opinion.

And I like this track :)

haha man I'm trying to bring the snare down a bit, I find it's too loud/clangy sounding!

I think another layer of drums to accent the main ones is what I need, and maybe have that hooked up to a sidechained compressor so that certain parts make others duck out a little..

heh...:)
I listened to it in dynamic headphones on my laptop from work, with just the standard soundcard/chip... maybe you're listening on monitoring speakers or neutral headphones ? (which would be best for the production stage)

...or maybe we don't seek the same sound :P
