this is another great Hunter S Thompson book ->

he hung out with the Hells Angels in like 64, 65 for a year or so. this was long before Altamont* or what they are known for now. back then hippies and radicals saw them as misunderstood counter-culture renegades.

The Hells were actually invited to left-wing intellectuals' parties where they would all take lots of LSD with Ken Kesey and his friends. they didn't realize yet that the Hells Angels were actually much more than freedom-loving rebels.. so it's an interesting window into their past.

towards the end of his time with them, they began to resent him.. perhaps feeling left out of the profits he would make off the book. so in the epilogue, he describes how they suddenly turned on him and savagely beat him.

it's a great book that is just as good in it's own way as Fear and Loathing. highly recommended

here is footage of him debating with a Hells Angel on TV about the beating that took place.

* for those who don't know about Altamont, it was a huge Woodstock-style festival booking Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, the Rolling Stones, Santana. They hired a few dozen of the same Hells Angels that Hunter S hung out with to do security for a crowd of 300, 000 people.

many people there - both bikers and the fans - were whacked out on bad acid. The Hells Angels started beating many of the fans mercilessly with sawed-off pool cues, and even knocked out one of the Jefferson Airplane. later on, a man pulled a gun during the Stone's set and was stabbed and stomped to death by the Hells

here is some classic footage of what happened there. it's often referred to as "the day the 60s died"

I suggest you read Gonzo: The Life of Hunter S. Thompson. And Ralph Steadman's The Joke's Over. Both books about Thompson which sheds a bit of light on the HST persona. HST wasn't a good person. A genius, sure. A great writer, no doubt. But also an alcoholic, wife beater, thief and liar.

What he wrote at the end of the Hells book and what actually happened are two different things. Hunter went to tell the leader of the Frisco Hells how to treat his wife in front of everyone. He had it coming for a while so they gave it to him.

Sonny Badger only asked Hunter for a keg of beer as payment, which Hunter never gave him. Years later, Hunter tried to apologize but it was then too late.

So it had nothing to do with his BSA or with Hells wanted to get paid. But writing it that way was more sensational and Hunter was all for that.
I'm feeling dedeiste right now..

cool I will check out those bios.

well if he confronted the biker about beating his wife as described, that is just asking for trouble. on the other hand, these were people who would hand out serious beatings for very trivial slights, and aren't the most honest of men themselves, so who knows what their real motives were

still a great book. it would be very interesting to read first-hand accounts of what the bikers he wrote about thought of him and get their perspective. that will likely never happen though.

i did hear about that keg of beer thing. in fact I think the biker in that TV debate brings up the issue but it isnt shown in this clip

Well sure, I'm not saying the Hells were right in what they did. I mean, pretty much all that Hunter wrote in the book actually happened (though as I stated above, not always in the exact way Hunter wrote it) and some of it is pretty hard stuff... they're no "angels" :D

The more I read about HST, the more I get to like him as a human being with his obvious flaws and not as a brainless "Vegas" druggie fan. I like that. He had so many layers.

pick up Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. After that get your hands on every other Huxley novel you can find

IF you got the entire summer, The Brothers Karamazov - Dostoyevsky, and again after, everything else he wrote

Yeah but vodka doesn't stick though. At least, I don't think it does. The only vodka spillage I've experienced was straight down my esophagus so I wouldn't know.

I can't believe anybody could say that Catcher in the Rye is long and boring. I can read that book in three hours. It's short as hell, it's a fucking pocketbook. Lord of the Rings is long. War and Peace is long. Catcher? Wtf... read it forty times at least in my life, it's quick.

Another great Salinger novel is Franny and Zooey. It's touching, but it's very sixties. I enjoyed it thoroughly though.

I have PKD's "Minority Report" in a book of his short stories. They're really interesting, especially "The Mold of Yancy" and "Autofac". But I was surprised to find out he has a few regular fiction novels. A noteworthy one from his early career (the 50s I believe???) was "The Broken Bubble". It makes a lot of arguments for women's rights and for the problem with button-down society.
I'm feeling mighty frisky right now..

yeah. I don't know where he got that idea from. Catcher in the Rye is not a long book at all

years ago I read a collection of Roald Dahl short stories. these were definitely for adults - not kids. they were all pretty dark and twisted. really really good!

matter of fact, just for shits and giggles, I would love to read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator and James & the Giant Peach again.

I haven't read those since I was 7 years old, but back then I loved them so much. I know, I know - they are kids books but they are fucking awesome.

Roald Dahl is an amazing writer.

long and boring as in "catcher in the rye" takes way to much time to get to the boring point its going to eventually end up to, way after it passes the everending extrapolation. if you read a lot. this " generic " book every fucking body on earth read and fell asleep on out of rope knoting boredom shouldnt even be in your suggestion list.

no action at all. but if you like to read ppl extrapolating on suff withou end be my guess and read that piece of disecrated tree.
