well French people weren't brought over here as slaves, so considering what actually happened to black people over here, it's really not fair to them to make that analogy.

I am not in any way trying to diminish the oppression or persecution the French suffered here at the hands of Anglo-Scot protestants (and since I come from an Irish family and am the first one in my family to be born over here, we had nothing to do with that) but I am just saying it can't be accurately compared to what black people have gone through down south

I think what he was referring to with his metaphor is the similarity in the degree of discrimination from one side to the other; not a comparison of afro-americans vs quebecois but rather how today's rednecks treat blacks and vice versa to how anglos and francos treat each other.

And the similitude is present. Nevermind the source and who had it tougher: the level of discrimination is the same.

ok. well even talking right now, present-day. I still don't agree. have you been down south? when I drove around the backwoods of Georgia and South Carolina I saw black people living in pretty grinding poverty. rarely owned a car, had to walk everywhere, living in shacks on the edge of alligator-infested swamps. city life was not much better.

a lot of white people down there that I met were very racist indeed. but I can't say any black person down there was anything less than polite and friendly to me. and that's a fact. I thought they would discriminate against me *for sure*, and it would be understandable, but they didn't.

so ya. I just don't think it's true what you guys said. I do agree that there is real antipathy here like you say, I just don't think it is the same as what I saw down south, with my own eyes.

Not all brains can grasp the intricacies of language. I happen to be able to speak four languages but I don't lord it over those who grapple with one.

And I certainly don't feel that if we are to celebrate "local" culture anywhere that you have to swallow whole all the bullshit programmed culture that they stick on these bills.

The idea that Quebec has that somehow immigration is invasion is backward and wrong. Non-francophones have done a lot of things here, and many of them are still not "anglos" even if they speak English.

This shit has to stop, it's disgusting how people think they have a right to impose culture on people who are obviously already accepting enough to throw themselves into environments where they are minorities.

If it's really about local culture at all costs, why don't we do a fucking St. Jean with Normand L'Amour, Madness Reign, and Phillipe Lalanne?
That would be awesome. But fuck this radio-fed culture garbage.

I'm feeling mighty frisky right now..

Lived in North Florida. Stayed in both Atlanta and Eufaula, Alabama and I saw both sides being racist. You're lucky, is all. I saw white people living in poverty, in trailers with welfare, as much as afro-americans. And both hated each other. Trailer parks with whites only and vice-versa.

It's all about where you are, Recoil. If you're in downtown Montreal, then sure, anglos and francos pay each other a hell of a lot more respect than people in St-fin-fond-du-Quebec will give people from Hull and vice-versa.

no offense but black people in the states can be just as racist as some white people

if the people you met were cool with you its probably because you were cool with them

ya. I see your analogy and can see what you are saying, now. I really don't know Quebec well, so I was not aware it was that bad.

and I guess I was lucky down south, for sure. though I never experienced it down there, I certainly have in Hamilton and Toronto many times, having had some girlfriends who were from Jamaica, Guyana and Trinidad.

Some Jamaican guys I would run in to were not exactly happy to see me dating "their women" (as one charming stranger told me one day). In fact they were sometimes very aggressive towards us. and white people too, would sometimes yell at us when they drove by. I couldn't believe it, but that's how it was.

however I also know lots of Jamaican people - like my one girl's family for example - who were so cool and friendly and didn't have a problem with it at all.

so really anywhere you go, no matter what skin colour or background, there will be people who perpetuate that shit, and people who rise above it. like Dialect said, it has a lot to do with what their parents taught em. unfortunately some peoples' parents are really ignorant.
