Not even Hitler diserves to roll on M-audio.
Primo: Don't touch USB crap, go Firewire Secundo: [ www.focusrite.com ] It's bloody cheap and it works fine.

avoid USB, go PCI or firewire
motu emu high end m-audio Also, if you are going for a GOOD brand, buy it second hand, I know Motu are ultra robust, so second hand is half price, full specs

USB is trash.
like zed said... firewire or pci. whats your price range? what do you need it for? and what kind of system and DAW are you running? if your running a mac and with fairly simple needs. i'd recomend the apogee duet. it's affordable and sounds better than just about anything that costs less than $1800. really decent pre amp too. it's mac only though... if you're looking for cheap pci card. i have an m-audio delta 66 for sale cheap cheap cheap. pm me.

thankx for the recommendations. interesting to see the opinion on USB... i'm using a Firebox now.. i find Presonus to be kind of unstable when recording instruments... but as a soundcard its been pretty cool... i am on Mac running Ableton Live 7. thanks for the offer murdock... dont have support for a PCI card unfortunately... i think i have enough info to run with now... oh, the main reason I asked is because it would be nice to have a better preamp when I record guitar tracks. i've been doing pretty well considering the fact im not using an amp, but going straight into the Firebox and since im making house/tech i have some creative license so i can just filter the shit outta my sound to get something interesting (in contrast to recording lets say a rock track, where it wouldnt really suffice)

for real man...
take a step back and look at your set up. if you don't use pro tools and don't use more the 2 in's and outs at a time. don't even think about it. get the duet... it will take a giant shit all over any interface mentioned in this thread or anything that costs less than 3 times it's price. it's really that good!!!

external pre-amps are always better.. even the behringer one is better (although they break down a lot)

how good are the pre-amps on the tc konnekt8? that's what I use but other than recording dumb vocals i didn't test them out much yet, would be good to know... |

yeah don't get me wrong...
the duet is not the be all and end all of anything. definitely not a replacement for a good external pre. but it'll definitely perform better than anything else thats built in (not to mention most low end external units)... at least in that price range. good pre's are fuckin' expensive man. not to mention... in an ideal world, you'd probably wanna use different pre's for different mics... different rooms etc...

Even a defective Soundcraft's Spirit Folio pre-amp would sound better than Behringer's pre-amp
