 Coolness: 146125 | i think sometimes we forget that most people don't know shit about DJing, because a lot of us spend most of our time with other DJs, we develop a sort of tunnel vision and we imagine that everyone understands exactly what were doing, the truth is, very few do, most people believe that DJing sort of happens magically either that or they believe there isn't much to it...they think it's easy...Most people who don't spin or don't know someone who spins think that track selection is all that DJs do. They have a hard time understanding that there is actually technique involved in producing mixes so that people don't stop dancing at the end of every track (seamless flow of un ending music) The thing about requests that bothers me however is not so much that the requester is demanding to impose their musical taste on other people (people do that all the time) it's rather that they fuck up my concentration, nothing worse than someone coming up to me when i'm barely holding a mix together by the skin of my teeth and saying "play some nirvana" then i spiral into a horrible train wreck, i feel like screaming "it's not my fault!"
i think bliss is mostly right about this type of thing, you have to develop some skills to placate people (the ipod trick is hilarious btw), sad that this is what it's come to... one suggestion is to only play gigs where you know peoples won't do this, so playing gigs at Korova type bars is out, but i think generally people are pretty well behaved at raves...There are plenty of gigs out there i think you just have to be careful which ones you commit yourself to. |

People go to clubs to listen to certain djs because they like those djs style They don't want to hear someone elses requests And if someone is really intefering with your concentration like you mentionned Basdini, ask them politely to wait until you're finished (I usually put up 1 finger, like a "wait a second" gesture) If they keep on doing it, call a bouncer or have some friends make a barrier. Its more important for everyone and the overall vibe of the party that you do a good set, then fuck it all up over one asshole who can't behave |
