I'm pretty certain they top-out at four ports; the hub still has to pass data through one port to get to the computer..

I dunno, never really used any USB hubs.. But keep in mind what I mentioned; despite USB 2.0 being relativley fast, it's still got a bandwidth limit.. Most USB hubs are 4 ports for a reason, any more than that and you'll start getting slowdown in your data transmission.. Your best bet is to get 2 4-port hubs, preferably powered..

acctually if i remember correctly the max usb you can split from a single slot is 127... but yeah obviously you lose speed everytime you add anything
Update » rawali wrote on Wed Mar 18, 2009 @ 2:19am
yup:

quote wikipedia:

L’Universal Serial Bus est une connexion à haute vitesse qui permet de connecter des périphériques externes à un ordinateur (hôte dans la terminologie USB). Il permet le branchement simultané de 127 périphériques par contrôleur (hôte).

if you shop online you should definitely go for a WUSB . ( there some half usb 2.0 / half wireless solutions out there )

but be sure your hub is powered and can throuput.

I have one! I'm serious I bought one for 20 something and it was the wrong product for me :( I had meant to get a bus card, not a hub. So... I have an extra one kicking around.

edit: Err OK I just read through the thread... mine has about 6 hubs.

you mean 6 jack,

6 hub would mean soemthing like 4 * 6 = 24 connection hub ?!

man i saw a guy online making a custom one , and honestly it would never retail for 20 buks.

hubs too big and wireless usb , is also not a good thing for you producers out there, the deleay and the compression would litteraly kill the track, well at least make the producing a nightmare...

when they will top 256+ MBps maybe . but audio , will always be better with a straight thick copper or silver cable & connector.

i agree with you vegan that you must have had problem with the card if it was loaded completely.

thou most usb appl will chew 200 mA , -> means that you computer supply got drained 1 amp right there for a 6port card .

I use a very small 4 port un-powered hub, that was purchased by a friend in hong kong for 1$ CAD. Good luck finding a deal like that here.

it's similar to this style :

They charge 20-30X as much here.

Since you are a Mac user I'd suggest avoiding USB for devices like external hard disks since the firewire ones perform much better. I have 2 firewire 800 hard disks and a soundcard all on the same bus, daisy chained, and it works perfectly fine. The only issue is the sound card will drop out if I turn on one of the disks while using it, but once everything is on I don't have any serious issues. I do have a 500 gig USB external hard disk I got for 70$ that I use only for backups though.

I'd have my external HD connected straight to the computer, I've be using the hub for things like my mouse, my iPod and shit I barely use like camera wire, printer, video camera, EyeTV...
I don't NEED one but right now I have at least 4 USB cables just sorted of chilling unplugged behind my comp cause there's no more ports.
I'm curious about powered vs unpowered... I mean, I'm guessing that if I need to plug more than one powered device into the hub, I'd need it to have it's own power supply... but does it still need that extra power if I only have one powered device? I don't think anything uses power other than my iPod...

It may be a little pricey but d-link products are pretty solid.
