If all goes as planned, in just a few years colonies of software robots -- "cybots" -- linked into a "hive" mind could be defending the largest computer systems in America against network intruders.

...and for those that don't remember how it all goes down..

[ terminator.wikia.com ]

Skynet was created as a United States Air Forces project to protect computers from virus attacks. When a virus infected the defense computers, the Air Force activated Skynet, not realizing it became sentient and was the one who created the virus.

Loral Space and Communications Ltd. said yesterday that it had completed the acquisition of the AT&T Corporation's Skynet Satellite Services for $478.1 million. The company said the price, down from the original agreement of $712.5 million, was adjusted to reflect the sudden loss in January of Telstar 401, one of two Skynet satellites. Loral Space, a New York aerospace and telecommunications concern, said it expected to expand Skynet into an international network of satellites that would connect with other networks. Skynet is a United States satellite operator specializing in the distribution of entertainment and educational programming.
