on a side maggot-related note...
my dad, who is doctor, told me.. in the Burn Unit at his hospital, they would use a certain type of maggot and apply them to treat patients with severe burns. apparently they eat away all the necrotic tissue and leave the wound very clean. weird. |

ha no. leeches are bloodsuckers - I think they phased out leeches in the 19th century. they had this weird notion that bleeding the patient was somehow beneficial.
but ya - modern medicine sometimes uses maggots to treat infection -> [ lib.bioinfo.pl ] |

yup, maggots eat dead tissue, so they prevent the spread of gangrene.. There's a picture out somewhere on the interwebz of a homeless guy in the hospital with one leg totally covered in maggots.. if it hadn't been for them he'd have been dead or had to have it amputated, but instead they he just got left with some massive scarring.

^^
well I think the idea is that they are only interested in eating dead or dying tissue, and leave the healthy tissue nice and clean. I doubt they'd use something that might attack healthy tissue if not monitored. It seems way too risky .. but I don't really know |

okay so they use something else (thats good)
really recoil i know one treatment , that needs larva to eat away either an other infestation or a burn , but the ones i heard you have too take them out afterwards because they grow too big and gets a little more voracious. damn i dont remember whats this threatment for, and im not talking about the blood suckers, i saw this on the live emergency show or something. euk , i dunno how i would react to someone walking to me and telling me they are dose-ing my wound with walking yogurt. ever heard about the first needle created by this indian doctor in something like 200BC. its as disgusting as that to me..

"Casu marzu is believed to be an aphrodisiac by local Sardinians."
I guess if you can convince your date to eat that stuff, you can expect just about anything.
