Most of the time u should get a phone call from them say either the shipper is paying or if u want to make any other arrangment to contact them. But it depend on what u buy and how they send it to u. maybe next time u should ask and inform yourself on how the itmes will be shipped and if they say ups ask them to put it collect on Purolator or fed ex and u will pay all the customs and or shipping charges it will be alot cheaper. or have it sent purolator or fed ex and it will be cheaper for customs.
U can't boycott UPS i mean come they are a multi million dollar company and i don't think they care if u decide not to use them again or just a couple of peeps on the internet as well...Not to be rude or anyhting!

No, (person i don't know), i just figured duties depended on where a parcel is from, not where it's going. Although i do love the defensivness.
btw, better make sure you introduce yourself next time you see me (have we met?), otherwise you knowing my name is creepy.

Shipping fees depend on where it's coming from, and where it's going. Y'know, the actual distance involved, and fees for having the actual item travel that distance.
Customs/duties are dependent on the item's "category", as in whether a "trade deal" was negotiated between the two (or more) countries. Brokerage fees are billed by shipping companies, and will usually include customs/duties, as well as what we could call "processing" fees.

i don't think they were the same item catogory.. one was CD's (from China) and the other was a wifi card that fits in a regular envelope (from the USA).
i'd have thought that, CD's from China would be taxes a little more.. Colin, i'll wave if i'm in ottawa.. say hi to anita for me, yeah ? :)

like Masa pointed out, UPS has already been featured on the fracophone Tv shoes "protege vous" or was it the other one, and they talked about UPS being the leader in ripping people off with there excessively high dutie charges.

Please don't twist my words, Vinnie. I posted a link I googled, simply because I knew there was a way to not pay over what is required by law, or stipulated by current customs and tariffs.
And I don't know where you saw someone (other than you) calling UPS "leader in ripping people off". Get the sand out of your crotch, little girl. :)

oups, i must have misunderstood.. sry about that Masa.
There has been many lawsuits towards UPS regarding this matter it seems. i thinl B.C and Ontario both are filing lawsuites against them and there expensive brokerage fee's.. there's HUNDREDS of complaints against them on many web-forums too. i just don't get why you guys are on there side.
