Interesting.

Of all the Israelis he came into contact with during his career, the ones he became closest to were Rabin's close aides, including the Prime Minister's Office director Shimon Shevess. The two are still close friends.

Israeli officials are divided in their opinions about his involvement in foreign affairs in general and the Middle East peace process in particular. The chief of staff usually focuses on the president's political work.

The appointment of Rahm Emanuel triggered widespread interest in Israel, the native country of his former Jewish underground fighter father.

The older Emanuel, a paediatrician born in Jerusalem, was a member of Irgun, the hard-line militant group which fought for Jewish independence until 1948. It was described as "terrorist" at the time by Britain. Mr Emanuel's appointment could reassure Israel that Mr Obama will continue America's close alliance. The Ynet news service quoted Michael Kotzin, a leader of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago, as saying Mr Emanuel is a frequent attender at Israel-related events.

Obama does have a chance to change the mindset that got us into war. More significantly, he has a popular mandate to forcefully challenge the militaristic, hawkish tradition of modern U.S. foreign policy. But that work would begin by bringing on board people who would challenge this tradition, not those who have been complicit in creating it and are bound to continue advancing it.

If he can give money back to the people instead of lining the pockets of big business; restore the positive image of the US as force for good; stop pushing an aggressive foreign policy (which I already know isn't going to happen); and work on cleaning up on the environment... Then yes, I suppose that could be considered change. Will any of these things happen? Only time will tell.

What can you expect really? Obama appointing a bunch of "hawkish neoliberal" Clintonites is no different than what Bush jr did when he appointed members from Bush sr cabinet. They're all top memebers of their party, with a plan to take that country in a certain direction. [ www.newamericancentury.org ]

I hope that Americans arent naive enough to believe that Obama being elected as their new president is the equivalent of the second coming of Christ, and that it's going to bring the rapture where they all go to heaven.

I'd also like to mention, that just because all those listed may have negative aspects to their backgrounds, it doesn't necessarily mean that the worst has yet to come.

yeah, the whole point of being a puppet-master is that you get to stay in the shadows so that no one knows who you are, making it impossible to pin any blame on you and making you free of any repercussions.

Touché. And yes, Fred, I get the idea. My point was that perhaps he's not the puppet that their last president was, and that maybe, JUST MAYBE, he might actually be a leader. Is that so hard to believe?
I don't want to be naive, but I'm not going to be cynical about the whole affair either.
