that game was genius, i saw commercials on american tv (when i had my illegal satelite direct tv setup back then) and got my sister to mail it to me when it came out in the states...

while people were fucking with acid pro n whatnot on pc, this "game" actually had more edge at the time, than the typical sequencer or wtv u call it...

the thing was, you needed to splice the audio cables of the playstation, into an amp, or computer to record what u made, cuz if you sampled anything at all, the memory cards couldnt handle the weight of the song and you couldnt save.

altho i didnt have a computer at the time, at least i had my trusty technics tape deck, and got 10 90min cassettes worth.

the program you use really means fuck all, i made 10 solid beats, and took them into a studio and got em all mastered, and vocals laid down for a lil cd back then.
also got a seperate track done, for sumone else, that went into the studio, and got radio airplay.

its better to use the best progs available, but it doesnt mean u cant rip an ill production with a shitty prog you are familiar with...

im only sayin this for all the geeks out there, who dont come out with ANYTHING, and bitch at you for using the "wrong" software!!@!
I'm feeling your nuts right now..

Fruity loops is great to beguin with, and you can go a long way with FL without a midi controler.
You will however get more milage out of a prog. like Reason.

i dunno man...
i bought a student copy of logic pro studio 8 for $250.
and i gotta say that it works for nearly anything you are doing and comes with a shit load of great instruments and a massive sample bank.
it's really a fucking awsome all in one program thats fairly easy to use for users of all levels of experience.
team it up with an apogee duet and little midi controller and you've got a pretty mean little home production studio.

as far as buying software...
logic is dirt cheap in comparison to many others and was worth paying the price just to have the manuals.

mind you... it's mac only

so if your a p.c. user you gotta make due with whats available, but for mac guys you really can't ask for more bang for buck.

Logic being the exception... to bad it only exists on mac.
With pc's, you have to do a little legwork, so to speak, but hasn't it always been that way? Isn't that one of the reasons why peoples like pc's in the first place? you have to build it from the ground up.

If your a p.c. user you gotta make due with whats available, luckily there is a shit load of stuff available for free
I'm feeling lucky right now..

if you wanna invest and get the most professional program its logic pro
or you can get cubase, which work the same sort of way
or fruity loops, which is the most user friendly, and it is not limited at all, even what the other dude said.

there are 2 thing that will limit you, your sounds and your imagination.

get a good drum sound bank, and some vsts for synths, id recommend :

samples:
VEC DRUM PACKS
HEX DRUM PACKS

Synths:
Z3ta
V-station
Vanguard
Nexus
Trilogy
Albino (i personally dont use but its good)

and vst for effects
Waves plug-ins
dblue GLITCH
Camel phat

and alot more...

The thing with reason is that you cant put anythning in it, what you have is all you can get, sure there are "refills" but its not like if you are adding something new, its more like presets.

but know that ALL DAW (Digital audio workstations, ie: cubase, protools, fl studio, reason) have all the same "audio engine" (if that ever mean anything) so there is no program that will "sound better or worse" its only on how you use it.

yeah digital performer is really good!!

but i find that the best software choices these days are best made along with your choice of your hardware.

digital performer works best if you got a motu...

logic works best with apogee...

pro-tools with digidesign...

everything seems to be becoming very well integrated for recording artists.

and is it just me... or is there alot less ppl setting up studios with cubase?

it seems that everybody wants to set up with either logic or pro-tools these days?

if you look at it over all...
setting up a logic studio is ridiculously cheap.
the software is dirt cheap in comparison to the competition and i have yet to see a better deal on an interface than the duet.

i'm actually really suprised, because i'm not usually one to boost the ego of big company's like that but i've never been happier with an audio investment in my life.

everything just works and my desk is clear of wires.

really makes me wonder how i coped for so long with my old Frankenstein p.c. set up.

You cant really compare Reason with Cubase, they are two completely different programs with different functions and uses. With Reason, you get a bunch of synthes, a drum machine (witch can trigger waves) and a whole lot of other stuff that are all midi based. It can be used on its own or rewired through a sequencer like cubase, like any other vst synth.
Cubase or the likes, is a wave recorder/editor with a midi editor. It does come with some native effects but you still have to load it with vst synthes, like the ones mentioned throughout the thread.
Cubase is by no means the most professional of the DAW's, Pro-Tools is still the one being used in the big studios.

just to warn you, do you love mixing? like really much?

if you do, id suggest not to invest to much in producing, because after a while, maybe 2-3 years, you wont be able to listen to music anymore, when music plays, the only thing you will be able to do is analyze the music, and you will see how much some tracks are poorly produced, even if they are good.

and chances are, like some of us, you will find that mixing isnt quite as fun as producing, so you'll maybe loose some interest in mixing, beside mixing your won tracks, which is the best ever.

still, i wish you luck, and be prepared to invest A LOT of time if you wanna do something good, by a lot i mean dont expect to release a track near 4-5-6 years of producing.

I am doing this for fun....I have put mixing on the side for a while...I have been on my pc loading music on cd , because let's face it i can't play vinyl forever the digital age won't allow me, i have to save cash for cdj's. That will take a while so in the mean time i decided while i save money, to stay home and sit in from of pc and try to compose, i mean what better way to save $....My bf wants to learn as well.. so there will 2 of us composing together!!!
I'm feeling confused right now..

The trick is to only listen to well-produced music

I started learning to produce around 96, and I still on a regular hear things that make me freak the fuck out with how amazing it sounds, and how incredibly well produced it is..

That's why I love ] and anything on [ Lifted"> ]
