Compose your own electronic music tracks? Go for cubase with some great effect plugins (waves series) and a truckload of synth and samplers. The midi fonctions of cubase are better than those of protools. There is a learning curve to all music production software but you'll be fine after a while. There is lots of learning resources available on the internet.

Hope that helps! Have fun =)

Well, i'm a rock/pop guy. I dont know if electronic music producer use other work environement than those used by every studio nowadays but if so i'll be surprised.

You have many options : Cubase/Nuendo, Protools, Sonar, Logic audio(for mac only), Cakewalk. The most popular ones are definitivly protools and cubase/nuendo.

I've heard about eletronic music people using ableton live, but i dont know very much about this program. It looks like a blend of a loop player/sampler ( like reason ) and a sequencer.

And yeah, all programs can basicly do the same thing. The cubase midi sequencing options are the best and you'll going to need that to compose music, then sends the midi signals to a synth or a sampler ( software ones used as a plugin or hardware ones that are less taxing on your CPU/RAM )that makes sounds.
I'm feeling relax right now..

Reason if you use a pc, Logic if you're with mac.

Eventualy you will want to invest in a good sequencer (cubase/protools/nuendo...) Samplitude is my personal fav. but they all do the same things, basicaly.

If you are not computer literate and know little about audio, go for Fruity Loops. Its the simplest but also the most limited.
I'm feeling lucky right now..

I am computer literate, i am learning as i go...so one baby step at a time, the pc is a great tool for music and everything else! I am having alot of fun, so i am not the best behind the pc right now but with time i will be!

Sequencers arent realy for making music, they are more for recording, mixing and controling your synths. Eventualy, a sequencer will most likely become your main production tool but it is not at all neccessary to beguin with, and will just make the learning curve a lot steeper.
Fruity loops is great to beguin with, and you can go a long way with FL without a midi controler.
You will however get more milage out of a prog. like Reason.

get cubase first and stick with it it's really the best.
some people use fruity loops too cause you can load the same instruments as cubase (vsti) but cubase really does it better.
and you can get the H2O pirated copy on torrents and stuff.
then if you like it, you can read clown's comments :P

as for good vst instruments. Get started with Nexus, zeta & trilogy.
If you want some good sample bases for drums, Vengeance Electronic Clubsounds is nice

FL STUDIO! woot woot!

i use it for electronic stuff, and hip hop alike...

the only single limitation, is your own creativity.

people can make dope beats on fucking mario paint!

just download all the mentioned programs and fool around with them, and watch all the tutorials...

if your heart is in it, you'll have the patience of reading, and watching video after video, and see which one you feel most comfy with!

maybe im not helping much, but just get some hands on experience and fuck around with sound...

best way to get into it.
I'm feeling your nuts right now..

that mario paint video made me wanna upload another one, then i started seeing vids on youtube about this old playstation game called "mtvs music generator" and instead of looking for a good one to post, i made my own recap of 97!

Update » Choda_Bean wrote on Sat Sep 20, 2008 @ 2:52am
i just realised at the 3:00 minute mark in my video, that it says "i'll definately check through my 10 beat volumed Audio Cassette archive and rip sum new mp3's out of them soon"

what that really means is that i have 10 or so old cassesttes in my closet from those times, with all beats made from my playstation, so were talking about 10 90min tapes full of early raw dialect hip hop tunes, that i'd like to listen to and record onto my pc and upload the gems!

anyways

ez
