i always give 20%. if the service is really shitty i give 15% or 17%... around here waiters are paid only 3$/hour so i feel very bad to don't let them.

also i always give big tips because it's one of the way, sadly,to get respect and good service in that world.. in all my fav nyc restaurant when the host knew me and he always gave me my fav booth or table.. they know what i drink and threat me very good.
I'm feeling hitched right now..

I tip in bars because it's a hard job (usually).

I tip in restaurants when the service is good.

I never tip when people ask me for tips. I don't give money to beggars and I'm not going to start in a restaurant.

I don't "tip" in cabs and deliveries (something I've learned to do, as I used to be pretty generous at that) but I do ask for a round-up amount, so they get a few coins that way. It's their job and it's not like they've done anything special.

I might tip if the cab ride was a fun experience (i.e. The cabbie doesn't speak when I'm dead drunk or strikes a pleasant conversation). I ask for my exact amount back when the cabbie has Haitian radio full blast and is speaking on his cellphone while driving. Fuck that.

in mtl cab drivers are very sociable.. in few years in nyc i think i got 1 conversation with a driver..

but usually i used car service because you get to be in luxury car for about the same price.. and yellow cab hate to go in brooklyn... even if you're just going in williamsburg!

but let me tell you i would die right now to pay a 10$ tips few times a week.. because right now my gaz budget goes around 500$/month. fucking sucks

ps: nice glasses dr! ha

I fail to understand why waiters are paid 3$/h in NYC ( or minimum wages in Mtl ) and KEEP THEIR JOBS. These people shouldn't feel pissed at poor tipping customers, they should be angry at their fucking shitty EMPLOYERS.

I understand if you're some sort of an immigrant or you just moved from another city/country and you really needed a job in the immediate but at one point, if you keep that job for an extended period of time, it's because you like that job.

So if you like working for a measly 3$/h, time for some professional introspective, don't unload your frustration on customers.

Does that excuse a shitty tip ? Certainly not. But I'm a bit tired about people who have low paid job and complain about not making enough tip ( *NOT* POINTING THE FINGER AT ANYONE HERE ! ). Ask for a fucking raise or get a better paid job ! If you're in school and that's the only job you can do ( because of the hours ), it's STILL ultimately your decision to work there.

It's like those crossing guards in Laval that are complaining about their 4 hours a day being cut back to 3 or something. Since when is " crossing guard " a carrier choice ? Not enough hours ? GET ANOTHER FUCKING JOB. That's what I did. There is currently a huge manpower shortage as we speak, no one can give me the " there is no available jobs out there " bullshit. Did you mean " well, that's a crappy job, I don't want to get my hands all dirty and shit " ?

-------------------------------------

On the flipside, I never tip under 15% personally, unless I get shitty service too. Why ? Because I used to work in a restaurant as well and just watching a good waitress go is enough to make me respect a job I'd never ever consider doing...still, most of these people do it with grace and a smile. THAT alone to me deserves a tip.
I'm feeling crookers right now..

Good tip usually assures good service in the future, it's just money guys... What's a buck or two when you order a drink? What's 5 bucks when you just had a 40$ meal?

If you cant afford to tip, dont go out or dont eat out, period.

I usually tip 15-20%, depends on my mood and how good the service is. If I was mistreated or had very bad service I leave a penny and never come back, I expect good service when I eat out.
I'm feeling dancehall thrilla right now..

Am I? I'm pointing to the fact that the only time I hear the radio full blast, it's haitian radio. CPAM, 1610 AM. I'm beginning to know their program line-up because of this. I wouldn't have mentioned the fact that it's Haitian if it wasn't for the fact that IT'S HAITIAN RADIO.

Mind you, the cabbies themselves are not always Haitian. I've seen Libanese, Spanish and others listen to Haitian radio. The fact that you linked the type of radio to the colour of the cabbie's skin is what makes you the racist, plisss. ;)

I'm not dissing the content, I'm dissing the music being played at ear-splitting levels.

you should get a battery-powered short-range transmiter and have it hooked up to your MP3 player, and then blast your music when you get in the cab.

I should do that :) We use to sell those at Radio Shack.

I'd have to find Orson Welles' War of the World broadcast.
