The device on the scroll
The motto "CONCORDIA SALUS", salvation through harmony, is inscribed on the scroll below the crest. This arrangement is also the same as on the arms of the province of Quebec arms.

The maple leaves
Montreal's coat of arms, like that of Quebec, is surrounded by a wreath of maple leaves. They are the leaves of the sugar maple (Acer saccharum) and they symbolize the amicable relations between the various elements of the city's population.

The beaver
Mounted over the shield is a beaver representing the industriousness of Montrealers who have worked to develop their city.

Form of shield
Following the example of the Province of Quebec, the City of Montreal, whose history and beginnings are identical to it, has adopted the French form of shield.

The field
The field is silver to recall the old coat of arms which had been composed by the first mayor of Montreal, Jacques Viger.

Heraldic cross
The heraldic cross is emblematic of the Christian motives and principles which governed the founders of the city.

---

The fleur de lys, of the royal House of Bourbon.
This is shown in the first quarter of the shield and represents the French settlers who were the first Europeans to possess the soil of the Island of Montreal. The original coat of arms adopted in 1833 had a French-Canadian beaver in place of the lily.

The Red Rose of Lancaster.
It stands for the English component of the city's population.

The thistle.
It represents those of Scottish descent.

The shamrock.
Indicates the fact that many of Montreal's early settlers and their descendants are of Irish blood.

The maple leaves
Montreal's coat of arms, like that of Quebec, is surrounded by a wreath of maple leaves. Leaves of marijuana were originally considered but were changed at the last minute for fear of mixing up Montreal with Kingston, Jamaica.

The beaver
Mounted over the shield is a beaver representing Montrealers' favorite dish.

Form of shield
Following the example of the Province of Quebec, the City of Montreal, whose history and beginnings are identical to it, has adopted the French form of shield. The english form of a shield was initially adopted until riots broke into the streets and the mayor's house was set ablaze 4 times in the span of a week. It was changed the following monday.

The field
The field is silver to recall the hair color of the first mayor of Montreal, Jacques Viger as well as most of the city's inhabitants, invariably investing time in slowing things down considerably for everyone, as can be witnessed daily on every ATM in the city.

Heraldic cross
The heraldic cross is emblematic of the Christian motives and principles which governed the founders of the city. Besides, every other city was doing it at the time so why be different ?

---

The fleur de lys, of the royal House of Bourbon.
This is shown in the first quarter of the shield and represents the French settlers who were the first Europeans to possess the soil of the Island of Montreal ( forcibly from the natives, it should be mentioned ). The english have relentlessly tried to get it back ever since.

The Red Rose of Lancaster.
It stands for the English component of the city's population. It could've been a fist with the middle finger extended but we preferred not to after much discussion.

The thistle.
It represents those of Scottish descent. Why the scottish are represented by such an ugly flower is beyond us.

The shamrock.
Indicates the fact that many of Montreal's early settlers and their descendants were incredibly lucky bastards in not having their houses torched on a daily basis by the english settlers. All these qualms were resolved when the english settlers opened pubs around the city, much to the french settlers' relief.

The Maple Leafs symbolize the amount of times they've lost to the Habs, and the sheer pile sort of hints at the fact that they have hit the shield many a time and relentlessly returned to continue to suck.

The beaver symbolism has a lot more to do with the amount of fur south of the border on the fairer sex up here. And it's at the top to indicate there's usually an ok trim.

Form of shield which I don't see anywhere. Well apparently this has to do with fending off unwanted fecundity of the above. Fat chance a lot of the time.

The silver was all they could afford, gold wasn't being created so well at the time because they didn't have the Pantone codes yet.

The cross has to do with the healthcare over here. It's sort of not so great, makes the whole crest look sort of bad, and ultimately was installed at great expense which was mostly spent on the expensive tone of red that didn't turn out so well in the gif image we see today (which is all that exists of the crest as well). Also symbolizes the need for abortions, that's why it's red and covers the cross. Also, see rose.

The fleur de lys - represents royalty, although there was never a Quebecois king. However France wanted to make Quebec think there was some kind of thing going on over here and slipped the ideas in the settlers' heads that they were the New Kings On The Block. Years later, still no King of Quebec, and the existing separatist parties are going for a democratic approach over monarchy, which I think is folly.

The rose actually has nothing to do with Lancaster, it has to do with the fact that there's a big Rosicrucian population here. Christian Rosenkreuz's tomb is under the Masonic temple on Sherbrooke and is guarded by Reptile men from the fourth density. Conspiracy! Dun dun dun!

The thistle. Scottish people are really bristly and tend to sting when they headbutt or glass you so they gave them this weed as a symbol. Also there aren't a lot of them here anymore so we can laugh at their stupid flower and they won't headbutt or glass us. Because they cannae fukken read French, ya doss cunts!

The shamrock. There are leprechauns hiding under Mount Royal and they don't want us to know, and this is one of the only hints.

The motto: "Concordia Salus" is actually a misprint of "Concordia Secus" or "So-so Harmony", a premonition of how bad the education would be at Concordia University years later.
I'm feeling pantalons fancy right now..
