I think that the biggest problem with racist/discriminatory words is the power we chose to give them.

If you go to the UK and call some gay people fags, they're gonna laugh at you and try and figgure out why you're calling them a cigarette. While fag is a powerful, discriminatory insult here in north america, just on the other side of the pond it's a common, daily-used word that refers to a common, every-day object.

I say plaster the streets with racial slurs. Have billboards and posters and commercials on TV that are nothing but racial slurs and discrimanatory words. Fag, dyke, nigger, coon, kike, spic, chink, gook, wop, whatever. Plaster it EVERYWHERE, make them every day sights. Have TV commercials play once every commercial break, 30 seconds long, that just shows and reads off a list of words that we use to hurt and seperate people. Do this everywhere untill finally, people realise that no matter what the sentiment that may have originally been behind those words was, that they are JUST WORDS.

Calling a black man a nigger isn't physicaly hurting him, yet he's willing to physically hurt people who do it. What if, like fags in europe, the words were used and repeated so much and so often, that they would just lose their meaning. Wouldn't that be great? Wouldn't the world be such an amazing place if we would flood the streets and the airwaves with all these words SO MUCH, that no one would ever take offence to them ever again?

The problem with those words is not that we use them, it's that we give them the power to hurt. If black people weren't offended by the word nigger, would white people use it on them? The same goes for any other racial slur or discriminatory word; if fag was as common and every-day as a cigarette, would gay people be offended by it?

The only reason that racism still exists is because people chose to let words hurt them. The words themselves aren't doing the damage, but the people who are reacting to the words are. Take away the reaction, you take away the word's power, and then it fades into obscurity, and the few people that will still seriously use the word to try and hurt will get laughed off for using such antiquated language.
I'm feeling deez nuts right now..

racism isn't about words...

it's about actions, treating people different based on race,

the words we call them are a peripheral issue.

Mayday, you're absolutely right. I have never used the word, and never will... Or have, but not in any insulting way. I mean, my mom was born in Madagascar, and makes me typing in these words even more reprehensible, considering even she has been a victim of racism when she was a teenager growing up in France, and she would be, as much as she loves me, and puts up with my sick sense of humour, would be disappointed in me. On the other hand, I write a lot of ridiculous shit here, and is by no means an excuse, but I do so on purpose, and I am not going to be ashamed of it, nor apologize.

You're also right about how, yes, it's easy for me type these words in the safety of my own home, and how I would shut right the fuck up, if there was a black man in front of me. However, I would never have to hide from uttering anything derogatory around a black man, not because out of fear of the repercussions, but because I am simply not that kind of person. I have a lot of respect for people, and believe me, I would actually stand up for someone if they were ever facing that type of discrimination --as I have done so in the past.

Yes, I should grow up. Yes, racism isn't (that) funny (sometimes).

I wrote this thread because my friend sent me the link, and it just seemed incredibly absurd... Which is just something that fits in so well on this website, if you hadn't noticed. I also did it to provoke a reaction from Bliss/Loneswordsman. Why not kill two birds with one stone?

If you want to think I'm a disgusting pig, then by all means, do so. I probably deserve it.
It's just part of me never bought in to the stance that Bliss took on his view of racism.
I couldn't help but feel that he was being just as disrespectful, by using the word so loosely, and never really had any conviction behind his words, unlike yourself.
I just really wanted to be entertained, by reading what he would have to say to this, is all.

Indeed the words are just peripheral. I don't believe anyone on this board is racist, regardless of the language that they use.

On another note. Look at the wonderful discussion we're having by simply posting something so horribly terrifying as the word Nigger on a discussion board!

It's not solely about words, but words are what people focus on the most. Like this thread, for example. People are looking at the words, and not the intent behind them.

Yeah, nigger is a racist word, but are we being racist with it? No one in this thread is saying shit like "we should kill all the niggers", and that's what people decide to overlook. Words without intent are just words. Our intent isn't to be racist, it's just to stir shit up with someone who is massively overcompensating for the fact that he was outed as a racist by being all super anti-racist and going as far as just calling people who shave their heads skinheads (which, granted, IS a pretty fucking stupid reason)

But that's the problem with words. A meaning and an intent gets assigned to them, and even when they're long past the point of being used like they were originally, the association sticks to them. Nigga being the best example.

If anyone has proven that that word doesn't mean what it used to, it's young black people that have actually moved on and started using the word in a friendly fashion. Nigga doesn't mean "nigger" anymore, it means friend/buddy. BUT, some people are just holding on to the definition that stirs up controversy, because they can't move past something and embrace change. People are terrified of change, even if it's positive, and what better, more positive change could there be to the english language than turning a word that was used to hurt and demean, into a word that means friend?

If people stopped taking offence to racial slurs, they would lose their power, and they wouldn't hurt anyone anymore. But that requires change, and that requires people to stop thinking about how things WERE and to start thinking about how they ARE and how they COULD BE. Look forward and see a better future, or walk with your back turned and see nothing but the past and the past mistakes.

"Nothing like watching a bunch of overprivileged white kids who never experienced real racism in their life talking about how they have the right to say 'nigger' all they want, cause they saw the chappelle show."

And shut up. I know what racism is, and No, I don't believe I have the right to say that because I saw the Chappelle show. That's ridiculous.

Mayday, thats the highest horse i've ever seen, you must get nosebleeds. I'm sure this thread must have struck a nerve with you or you wouldnt have gotten all high and mighty. What you seem to forget is, no one here is serious. As fun as it is to be spoken down to by someone who doesnt even know me but includes me in a blanket statement, you're generalization is a tired cliche and to be honest, no one cares. No one is 'hiding in their safe apartment'. We all go out, we've all seen life and no one on this board is the bigot you accuse them of being.

Blisss is bored, we are bored. This is the result of it. Calm yourself. 'The minute i'm in front of a black person' guess what. Nothing changes. Nothing changes in front of anyone. Why dont i use my real name? check your birth certificate, hypocrite, i'm sure it doesn't have a jungle/army cliche written anywhere on it.

To anyone else looking to get in on the self-righteous tip, check the domain name, then check yourself.

p.s. Chapelle went to Africa after bailing on his show, not before.

That's actually a very racist thing to say.

"Wigger" = "White Nigger"

But thanks for the lecture.

And if I was black? Quite the irony that you would highlight my skin color to bring about your own racism. Why would my skin color make any difference here?

Your skin colour makes a difference when you are talking about how black people should quit whining about racism and slavery in a society originally built on racism and slavery.

I would like reparations from the French, the British, the Spanish, the Dutch and the Romans for having oppressed my people; the Cree, the Iroquois, the Inuits and the Germanic Tribes during pre-Roman invasion.

If you share bloodlines with any of these people and insult me, you are racist. My people have suffered and been enslaved in various ways, for hundreds of years. Our land was stolen both in North America and Europe. My people were deemed inferior and possessed no rights.

Oh, right. I don't get to bitch and moan about what my ancestors lived hundreds of years ago, right? Fucking double standards :D

The point being, most "tribes" of people have been oppressed at one time or another. I think that using this as excuse for ANYTHING is bullshit.

Case in point: Germans have been both slaves and tyrants. Same deal with the native here. Yes, they were butchered. But they butchered each other before the white man stepped in. People tend to only remember what can serve them.

^i think your missing the point...

let's look at the history for a second

black people were captured by warring tribes in central africa, brought to the coast and sold into slavery, forced to work on plantations where whatever children they had would be slaves as well, They were freed finally 150 years ago only to live in segragated communities and not allowed to own guns to defend themselves from the KKK, further they were prevented from excercising their democratic rights in a free country all the way into the 60s. And they still face systemic racism from police (drive while black anyone?).

does anything in your family history in the last 300 years compare to this, i really don't think so...
I'm feeling surly right now..
