that last one is better.. I still wouldn't go around telling fledgling producers that they don't need any music theory though. I say take in and consider all the information you can.

:) electronic music ( for me anyway ) is more about sound design and inspiration\creativity than actual music theory ( the quality of your synth sounds etc )... im from a mindset that considers this a masterpiece

i dont know what are your thoughts about it... but im not sure any music theory applies here... unless you are considering the effect of signal pulsed harmonics on looping distorted drum sounds. Thats why im saying ¨standart music theory¨ is not important as most of the music i consider genius is not based on traditional music theory at all...

id like james to rationalise this

see what i mean ? im not sure gantz graf is in d# minor
electronic music as its own language that ¨traditional music theory¨ cant explain... thats why i go around telling fledgling electronic music producers that they dont need any music theory

I think Future sound of London puts it best by saying ( we were never musicians... we are collage artists )

No... im just saying.. im not sure traditional music theory is absolutly neccesary to come up with great electronic music. imagination a sense of ¨what sounds good¨and technical know-how is most often all you need.

What musical theory classes did you take to come up with your album ? probably basic stuff but lots of time spent twiddling knobs right ? problably more time tweaking knobs and messing with sequencers than learning actual music theory im sure.
Update » Dakurv wrote on Wed Jul 9, 2008 @ 1:53pm
ie : music theory cant explain what makes the sound of filter/resonance/accent filter of the 303 sounds so nice... well its the basis of a whole gendra of electronic music.
Update » Dakurv wrote on Wed Jul 9, 2008 @ 1:57pm
to me trial an error as been more precious than theory

isnt music theory about knowing what note/chords/scales goes with eachother and about song structures and timing ect?

whats the point with music theory and the filter of a 303?

someone with no musical thelory cannot write, thats all, if you dont know (or hear?!?!?!) that some notes just cant go with another, everything you will write will sound false.

if you think good music is only making a beat and sampling sounds randomly over it, its not considered as writing, its considere fucking around with sounds

btw i didnt listen to any of the links, because i am at work, but still, id like to hear tracks "off tha hizzy mothafucka yo king bomb whatever" made without any music theory.

right now i perceive this as a "im trying to destruct everything that has been known on music for thousands of years"

correct me if im wrong, but that seems like what you are trying to say.
Update » Deadfunk wrote on Wed Jul 9, 2008 @ 2:11pm
and what is so different in "electronic music" than "normal music" except sampling?

arent you doing "notes"?

Deadfunk... im trying to say sound design is a lot more important to electronic music than traditional music theory... for exemple... you could be the best music theorist in the world... but if want you own is a casio keyboard... you probably wont get much praise... but you could have a 808 and a 303 .. dont know shit about what c# means but create ¨good techno¨

the tools you own and how you use them is probably more important than knowing all the chords there is to learn on a keyboard.. to make techno you only need to learn basic music theory imho... lets admit it... its 4x4 repeted beats ( wich is the most simple beat you can think of ) and melodies more simple than what we use to play in grade school on our flutes ( usually 3 notes melody )

thats the simple reason why i think Alien_zed doest need music theory classes from james... he already seem to have all the skills needed.. he knows how to compose a good track... just needs to jazz it up... its all in the samples , in your synth sounds and how creatively you mix it up.

Now for the filter of a 303 ... i was refering to a certain ¨magic¨ that only trial and error can get you... to a certain magic that only using the right equipement can get you... why is everyone after certain synths... because.. a lot of times in techno... the sound of the synth makes the music...

Now im not trying to destroy everythi9ng that has been know on music for thousands of years... im just trying to say the truth is elsewhere than music theory as far as i am concerned.... for examples... trance riff are so basics... you dont need music theory to perform them... but you need to know that a detuned phased sawtooth with just the right delay and reverb is needed to make them sound ¨trancy¨. Knowing how to adjust the ADSR and choosing the right filter and wich resonance level is more important than knowing the theory behind that 3 notes automaticly generated by an arpegiator melody ( hahaha ).

Bottom line... :) everyones happy.... arent we ?

huh, i dont use "just 3 notes" in my tracks, sorry to tell you but your definition of "good techno" seem to diverse really from mine,

i dont hear often trance with only 3 notes, or its shit trance, tell me above and beyond, only produces their tracks with 3 notes?

yeah right

sound design is as important in any music,

lets say i can play bark at the moon's solo, but i play it on a shit fisherprice guitar without distortion and with a cheap broken ampli...

ohh but its rock, sound desing as not the same importance!!!!?!?!?!

i call bullshit, if sound design wasnt as important, then why would they bother building violins, sax, trumpets, drums, guitars,
why dont they just use only 1 instrument of every genres in classical orchestra, why do they layer if sound design isnt as much important.

seriously i wonder what music you listen to if you think 3 notes in a track is enough to be called good music.
Update » Deadfunk wrote on Wed Jul 9, 2008 @ 5:32pm
i just listen to some of the like you posted,

ex: the square pusher track and the fsol, they both are made out of "sampling" sampling beats and sounds and re-arranging them. no, there is music theory because it has a structure (well, sort of) and timing, but there isnt much fooling around with notes, but thats not really "wow super duper mozart would love" kind of techno.

the track you said you consider it a "master piece" i dont really see whats the masterpiece in this, its more of "nothing goes on during 3:51, but even with the notes that plays on the kind of electronic-bell/whatever, there IS music theory, a "SCALE", and "NOTES" are used!!!

wow,

what a wonderful world
I'm feeling hardcore right now..

I just listened to the BB remix and the one after.
Music therory is by no means necesary to compose music.
But it would certanly help your music sound less random.
You should learn it rather than diss it.

Knowledge is power.

you know what, im bored, im bored of people saying techno is better, techno is worse, anybody can do techno, techno is not music, techno isnt the same as "real" music, techno this techno that.

techno IS music, its made the same way any other genre is made, same rules applies. at the end everything is just sounds, and sounds have laws to sound good with eachother.

and this law is called music theory, you cant go without it, if you do and its good, then its just luck that everything you did fell into places, you can have it without knowing it, but its still music theory

i think that your point is that you dont like the word "theory" in music.
I'm feeling hardcore right now..

I think you are right... its probably the word theory i dont like... i see it more as a language... I have learned music i dont know why you think i did not :) not to a massive extent but enough to teach for a compagny and being paid for it. ( Clik musik )

anyway... im working on remixing rising shine from Alien_Zed... lets close this discussion and start a new one when you can hear my most recent work... peace !
