theres a minimum you have to make (per annum) before you can do that, also you'd have to charge tax (you'd need a pst and gst number) before you can write shit off

So, yeah, the problem is that there are absolutely no consequences to not paying a DJ. None.

(We are the only ones who don't defend our rights, for fear of being mocked, of being called an asshole or "tête enflé", and of not getting anymore gigs. Fuck the Union des Artistes...we need to start breaking legs.)

why can't you have a full time job to register a business?
i've never heard of anything like that before?
and as far as taxes...
you can always include them into your cost.
not to mention write off a good portion of you expenses as well as invest into rsp to bring you into a lower tax bracket.

1 person could register a business, and a bunch of DJs could be employees, you could have a DJ company, and you could get a credit card in the name of the business. Anything charged on that card is a business expense, at that point. You'd also need someone to take care of accounting and all that (but it is way easier to do it as a group than to have a bunch of people solo).

you can register a business whenever you want. To write off expenses, you need to have a minimum annual revenue and also have tax numbers. At this point, you need to charge tax. Simply having a registered business is not enough to write off expenses.

I dont think rrsp contributions actually lower your tax bracket, you get credit(ed) instead. I could be wrong, im not a CA

yeah you can get a higher annual revenue if the business comprises of a bunch of DJs/artists, instead of one person.

yeah the trick really is to form a group. If you have 10 hard working DJ's/producers in a group, it is much easier to form a business, get an annual revenue that is high enough to declare business expenses, and most importantly, if one person gets fucked over, the entire company can boycott a lousy promoter.

About that " paying tax for DJ fees ", they'd have to be making about as much or more money than on welfare to pay those. Most DJs I know can't live off the meager salary they get, much less pay taxes.

^^we have to get paid first in order to organize all that. Sounds like alot of trouble for 50$ a month (in a good month).
Which tax bracket does a joint and two beers fall into? Seriously we're not talking about getting 1000$ instead of 800$, or 5000$ instead of 1500$, we're talking getting 50$ instead of 0$, or 100$ instead of 20$ ...

9 times out 10 the price is not negotiated beforehand (again, for fear of being UNbooked), so the promoter sticks us at whatever timeslot they want, at whatever venue we have to find our own way to, makes us play on shit equipment, gives us 0 respect, no proper treatment ("hey, you need a bottle of water?"), no fuckin nothin'. Then it's "play, monkey, play!". And at the end, the promoter pulls out his empty pockets, curves his mouth downward, and laughs at you when you turn away. Sounds too bitter? Fine, i'll stop, 'cause i like playing music...alot.

DJs in raves are very underpaid (generally, but not all the time), and in some bars as well. I guess we ain't special, like any other commodity, when corners need to be cut, they cut through us...
