WEP seems to be easier on routers (especially cheap ones) than WPA, I believe it is less computationally expensive.

Also the low end dlink/linksys ones really start to suck when they have to do switching on more than a few machines (mixed wired/wirless).

But I would say the cost of using WEP or even WPA outweighs the slowdown you will get from all the freeloaders who will abuse an open connection. You can also hide the SSID to make it more difficult to infiltrate the network.

no i used to set up wi-fi networks over the phone, and using WEP with VISTA 9 times outta 10 was a bitch, and didn't work, whereas WPA1 an WPA2 worked all the time.

I personally am on OS/X
