Stealing Wifi

So I got a wireless router, and i thought Id be nice and leave it unsecured. I figured neighbors would use it when theyre in a bind or the random guy needs wifi or whatever. Cuz Im a nice guy. Anyways, these asshole neighbors of mine, are using it 24/7 and its slowing down my connection.
Is there any way to keep the speed of the router quick and getting the neighbors off it? I would put a password on it, but it slows down the connection?

I think that there should be an option for doing all of that (restricting access/bandwidth to specific MAC Addresses) in the config menu for your router, but without knowing what type and what modle, that's about as specific as I can get.

You have a big bandwidth... or should I say hearth.
Putting a pw on your router should not slow down your connection. |

like with this?
The MAC (Media Access Controller) Address filter option is used to control network access based on the MAC Address of the network adapter. A MAC address is a unique ID assigned by the manufacturer of the network adapter. This feature can be configured to ALLOW or DENY network/Internet access.

How does a pwd slow down your connection? That makes no sense.
put a wpa pwd on it and use mac filtering for extra security If your connection is slow it is most likely because you are a.) using p2p software (or your neighbours are) b.) you have spyware c.) there could be an issue with noise at that point call tech support and have them tweak your connection d.) you have a defective telephone cable (are you on dsl or cable) or you perhaps have a dsl filter on your modem (duh remove it that is for the phone) e.) check the placement of your router, good rule of thumb the higher up you place it the better, and not near any other electronic devices, windows etc. Also try logging into the router and tryin a different channel if it is slow on channel 11 try 9, or 6 or 1, which ever gives the best use that. its all good to be nice, but if you have a cap on your bandwidth your genorosity is gonna get you in some financial bullshit, especially if your neighbours are on 24/7, secure your network ASAP

yeah you can block mac addresses.. check the list of active connections and block their mac addresses.

Oooh...its already going faster. I think the neighbors were running P2P on it. I just filtered them out. Thanks Screwhead

1 person running p2p can bring a network down, especially if your router doesn't have good QoS (quality of service).

Dude securise your network put a password.
In Europe, someone steals your connection and download kid porn you go to jail. It's coming here soon too! Update » DonLouis wrote on Fri Jun 20, 2008 @ 12:56pm its considered criminal neglecting not to do it

yar, u must modify ur router password... so it isnt default or system or password... and pasword protecting your wireless network doesnt affect your connection, unless you don't have the password :)
Ufot-route this bitches~!!! (boom!!!)

Personally, I would never let anybody use my wifi. Hell, whenever I'm stealing someones signal, I abuse the shit out of it! It wouldn't surprise me if the poor bastard found a couple hundred extra dollars on his bill at the end of the month.

hahaha
btw adding a password would slow down your connection if it is encoding and decoding the signal to insure that any stray wireless signals cannot be intercepted and processed... it shouldn't slow it down enough to notice though, unless you're maxing out the connection... in which case of course it's going to slow down

It's not the password that slows things down per se, it's the encoding and decoding that results from choosing a more 'secure' method of connecting to your router. As little as the overhead is, it's still there, and it grows as the router is pushed to its bandwidth capacity...
as to what makes me think that? oh, just a bachelors in computer science (pending) but you are right in saying that it's not the password itself that is slowing anything down...

Word...Ive noticed the slow down that occurs with passwords. I asked about it, and my ex-roomie (a puter engineering student) explained it to me.
See post above for explanation
