aww thats sad. i dont think home insurance would pay up anyways, because there is allways a "deductible"
which mean you have to pay the first 500 or 1000$ or something when you get stolen and they pay the rest.

unles your bike was worth more than 500. otherwise, there would have been nothing to do

Funny that with everyone going green these days, more and more people are getting bicycles and I'm hearing a lot more about bike theft than car theft these days.

Bottom line is :
Blackberry, iPhone, iPod, Mac Air, 3000$ mountain bike. You walk around with that shiny expensive shit, you askin' t'git robbed, muthafuckah !

Like Deadfunk says, don't leave your bike on the sidewalk. Crackheads can't lift : secure your bike on your balcony or anywhere on top of some stairs.

That alone should be a deterrent for theft.

Or am I going to get the typical answer..
If they want it, they will find some way to take it ?!

When i was a mechanic, i had a general rule of thumb. If a thief wants it bad enough, they will get it. Applies to everything from ipods to porsches. The best bike like we use when im out with my friends, is someone staying outside with them. Luckily, our place is big enough to keep them inside.

i think it's a mission impossible.. the best is to keep it in your house.

i got stolen often in mtl.. at some point i had 4 bikes.. some i always kept inside (chain to my kitchen table..) and i had one for when i'm lazy and just want to go somewhere fast.. i live it outside..

i had a trick also for the one i let outside.. i was taping the frame with black hockey tape.

strangely i never got stolen during 2 years in brooklyn..
I'm feeling hitched right now..

yeah, if someone wants it, it's theirs.. You have no idea how easy it is to pick the lock on most bikes. A U-lock can be picked by someone who's done it often in about 40 seconds using a paperclip split in 2.

Indeed. What I fail to understand is the sea of expensive looking bikes peppered across my street which are chained and locked to metal fences on the sidewalk in front of their buildings. Do you have to leave it in plain sight like that ? That's pretty much advertising your bike to potential thieves. I swear, walking my street is like shopping for a bike.

I'm sorry but everyone who does that is asking to get robbed.

Funny some of these people that I know will go as far as putting their home computer away from their windows so people aren't tempted to break in and steal it, yet leave their 3000$ bikes locked on their front porch. I can't figure out what goes through people's heads sometimes.

The worst was Krytonite (sp). a few years ago their "top of teh line" u-lock was able to be picked using an emptied bic pen. The recalls were apparently a nightmare.

here, check this out; if you know how the locks work (whick most bike thieves will) all it takes is an old key, some bits of metal and an elastic..

All we need is a few well publicized incidents of thieves getting brutally stabbed for trying to rob shit and the crime rate would go way down.

if you think about it, the crime rate will stay the same, just the ratio of brutal stabbings to bikes stolen will change.
