Happy Bubble-cheese!

Once known as "The Cheesemaker", Montreal's DJ Tipsy belongs to a rare breed of artists who proudly refer to their music as overtly "cheesy". Considering his dedication to a genre where excessive cheerfulness is the only prerequisite, how could anyone but the most bitter of cynics question a penchant for making people smile? The aptly named Bubble Gum event Saturday night provides yet another venue for Tipsy to spread his message of musical joy.

Hour How would you describe the music you play?
Tipsy I see it as sped-up Eurodance, around 180 b.p.m. Lately the style has definately been influenced a lot by trance, so we hear more and more remixes of vocal trance tracks, alongside cheesy trance synths. It's all about the cheese, if you ask me. I'm all about fun and happiness, and I guess that reflects my personality the most.
Hour Do you think there is a big scene for happy hardcore?
Tipsy Montreal's happy hardcore scene has been growing a lot lately. We even got Brisk from the U.K. during the summer, which is a big improvement for the scene. Worlwide it's quite popular. The U.K. is definately the place where it is the most popular. You can find clubs, radio shows and huge parties entirely dedicated to it. Even in Japan it's getting really big. Montreal has absolutely no happy hardcore (HHC) records for sale. Most DJs find them thru Internet record stores from the U.K., and eBay.
Hour Tell me a bit about yourself - when did you start playing out?
Tipsy I'm 19 years old. My father watched My big fat greek wedding and he liked it. I started playing in parties at a party called Tao at the beginning of 2000. At the time I was playing IDM in chill-rooms. Later I moved on to Jungle, until I found my true musical love: happy hardcore. Althought I mostly spin HHC, I always try to incorporate my old records into it, to be a bit different, y'know?

Drunken Midget and renegade legion present Bubble Gum, March 8, featuring N.Y's MC Jumper and Jare Fox, rising star in the North American HHC milieu performing for his first time in Montreal, Ottawa's Bowzer and Johnny Don't Do, local DJs Tipsy, Mindset, The Vibe Monkey, Aone, Blackmarket, Neoform and Karl Marx, and two surprise out of town guest DJs (20$: info: (514)724-4574)

i think there was a sense or irony in that comment, not cause those lyrics were in a hhc track, but cause eminem was mocking moby.. but moby hasn't made techno in years, and the techno he did make was the worst shite i've EVER heard. i mean this stuff was bbeyond terrible.

if you don't know what i'm talking about, listen to "Early Underground" by moby. i swear any time i hear it i just wanna crack the cd in half.
