people getting hurt (even when it's me :p) funny!!!
I don't know why, people tell me I'm cruel. There was an episode on COPS where the policeman arrest drunk driving kid on the side of the road... and during the arrest a dude on bike gets SMASH by a car on the side... I could not stop laughing for 15 min!!! I have to find this on youtube :p Update » Shindy wrote on Thu May 22, 2008 @ 1:12pm and no, the guy did not die, he was just pretty lost from the whole incident!

oh, yeah, for sure, just straight up mixing tunes, honestly anyone who can keep a beat can do. Being a DJ that just mixes is fuckin' child's play, it just takes a little practice.
But turntables CAN be used as a musical instrument, and the shit that people can do with one is amazing.

There's a ton more than just that.. Some insane stuff. You should check out the documentary, Scratch. Fuckin' mindblowing stuff in that. Update » Screwhead wrote on Thu May 22, 2008 @ 2:10pm looking for a video of the scratch routine from Wave Twisters that's my favorite, I found this.. Specifically, there's one part around 3-3:20 that he does a quick little thing, it sounds exactly like a bird chirp, it's fucking insane!

yeah.. turntables as instruments are more of a rythmic thing than percusive, but it all boils down to the individual style of the DJ.. The scratch group that QBert, Mixmaster Mike and Apollo were in, they all had their own parts. Qbert was scratching the drum beats, Apollo had a trumpet stab, and Mike had something that I can't quite remember.. but it all comes down to what you're good at. Some DJs are amazing at beat juggling, some are amazing at the rythmic scratching like what they're doing in that video.. But combine the 2 together and you get some insane stuff.

I totally love scratching and beat juggling tricks.. If I had better decks it's what I'd be focusing on, 'cause seriously, mixing is fuckin' child's play. Anyone, ANYONE, who can keep a beat, can do it with enough practice.

Funny, this last vid was done pretty much around the same time I was experiencing with scratching myself. I was NOWHERE near these guys, mind you, but I could hold my own.
Unfortunately, I managed to absolutely wreck my Numark turntables doing that...but man was it ever unbelievably fun. Moral of the story is : don't attempt scratching on ANYTHING else but SL1200s or something similarly robust.

Blake is so teh ghey, yeah that's right, diss one of the only original electronic musicians in town...
Precociousness is an awful pandemic and parents love to encourage it. Back when OM festival was in its heyday, there was this crazy hippie woman who would take her little spoiled brat to all the festivals. This kid would come up to you and say shit like "that's not how you do poi, you're doing it wrong!" or "mommy's off fucking some guy she just met" or "let me show you how to roll that joint", "this ecstasy is bollocks", etc. Her mother, meanwhile, was rolling around naked in the ambient stage/space, rubbing herself. It was pretty disturbing. And everyone thought that the little girl was cute. I personally was hoping she'd die of dysentery from bad vegan food. As for using the turntable as an instrument, the pioneers were not scratch artists and this isn't the only way you can make music with them. In the experimental and electroacoustic community they are rather commonly used to create soundscapes, and the first to do so was John Cage, back around the 30s. So really, one of the first applications of two turntables and a mixer was to change the pitches on sine wave recordings.

John Cage was pushing the boundary's of music in the 30's, but just because an object produces sounds doesn't make it a musical instrument.

That's not important, the fact is that any sound can be incorporated into music. Where we draw the line on what is an instrument or not depends heavily on semantics - how is it being used? Throwing something down the stairs deliberately could be considered music because it was intended as a creative act or orchestrated in graphic notation but that doesn't mean that when you drop something down the stairs everyone should gather around and clap.
But I did anyways, it was funny.

Modernity tells us that music and art need not exist formaly as long as there is intention or it is being carried out by someone with notoriety.
I've seen where that road leads and in my opinion its bullshit. Basically its peoples too lasy to learn the ropes who get creative with preexisting definitions or play out there rebellious instincts in purely conceptual ways. Modernity's dead end, the empty wall, silence, death.
