I'm not saying hiphop 1978 is the same as hiphop today in anyway...
A little sidenote here; not all hip hop is the same. Check out backpacking hip hop. I.e. Atmosphere, P.O.S, Sage Francis, etc. :D As close to the roots as you can have it.

exactly what I'm on about. think about it...it's all legal and good when it makes a ton of coin and every sheep needs it and therefore it must be protected. I'm not saying hiphop 1978 is the same as hiphop today in anyway....but it did start out as an expression through illegal means that cultivated all sorts of great things we love today. but yeah, I couldn't agree with you more.

@ Masa "Now challenging legality for personal gains... Doubtful, IMHO" - check into Ayn Rand, she has some interesting points that would say it should ALL be for personal gains and that in turn benefits the masses.

OK - I would never torch or break or vandalize anything or hurt anyone on purpose. I hope I'm clear on that. but isn't this the second time that cop cars have been burned in a month or something...right at a cop station a couple of weeks ago? doesn't this mean anything to people? isn't there a message in those actions? I don't condone them really....but I prop up and check it out and think about it because it may mean something deeper than what the media, our family and peers lead us to believe. That's all I'm trying to say.

I'm really not sure I'm following you, but it might be just me. That being said:

As for hip hop, I personally don't enjoy much of it, especially the gangsta variety. And while it may have evolved from an "illegal activity", I'm not a fan of the culture the "legal" variety spawns.

As for Ayn Rand, I've never read her work, but I fail to see how a partisan of market capitalism would advocate theft, which is what I was implying by challenging legality.

As for the burning cars, I think you're trying too hard to see a meaning between these two incidents. Again, just my opinion, but couldn't it be that the mediatization of torched police cars simply gave the idea to rioters to torch some last night?

I mean, with all due respect, it's good to look for symbolism and all, but I think you're giving way too much credit to the (stupid) people last night.

... As for looting, well... I'd be tempted, yeah. Not sure I would've done it though. But I'd be tempted
I'm feeling teh peace (^^)y right now..

this debate is retarded. I haven't read more than 2-3 posts but listen, situation is this:

Drunk people flyin' high on emotions = break shit and scream a lot

I mean, I remember once when I was totally smashed at my old place, I wound up throwing glasses against the wall and trying to break lampshades. It felt right.
(hahahaha, I guess it's a "you had to be there" kind of thing.)
