but theres just a way of life about vinyl digging, track manipulation, and i dunno, its like back in the day when you bought your favorite artists cassette. when you pop it in your walkman, u listen to the whole album, from side A to side B, where the tracks that you didnt buy the album for grow on you, and learn to love the whole LP. theres just more value to your purchase, something you can hold in your hands...

Man those were the days.. That's a problem I've got with CDs and, to a degree, mixes in MP3 format.. People tend to just listen to their favorite bits/favorite tracks, as opposed to actually listening to the whole mix. I've seen the same thing with people who watch DVDs.. They just skip to their favorite parts after a watch or 2 and don't bother with the rest of the movie, and I personaly find that fairly offensive.

Back with casettes (audio and VHS) for the most part, if you popped it in, you were in for the whole ride, not just your favorite bits, because they weren't as easy and as quick to find as they are now. It's like people don't want to bother with anything that isn't their favorite, but in the case of the mix or the movie, your favorite bits wouldn't exist together in that way if it wasn't for everything before, and everything that comes after.

And as good as any psy DJ or any other DJ who uses only CDs, as much as they may love their music, I always come back to the crate-digging scene in Scratch. You're never going to find a CD dj that's as dedicated to collecting as a "real" vinyl DJ, and that bit that shows the basement of the shop in Scratch is just the most awe-inspiring scene and one of the most incredible things I've ever seen in my life.
I'm feeling fuckin' crazy right now..

.....waiting for ONE single good rebuttal about the event name, without defending how cool hippy chicks are, or how good psytrance is, or how little amount of money you spend on getting the music from your favorite artists.....

totally agree. I love diggin in the crates. some of my records I've hunted for several years before I find em. and actually a lot of the really really rare stuff from back in the day doesn't even get ripped to CD, unless you can find one of the handful of people who owns it to do it for you. the only way you are gonna be able to get it is on 12", if you can find it

I can see why people use CDjs, but I am all about the vinyl. like the man said, when you get the original plate, you find b-sides that grow on you and wind up being better than the tunes you got it for

Absolutely! I get chills down my spine every time I watch that scene.

In fact, here it is:

I honestly find it hard to call people who have never really gone crate digging a DJ. You may be able to mix, be it on a CD or a turntable, but there's something about really digging and finding that one-in-a-million jem that you're never going to find on CD, soulseek or beatport and that so few people are going to have..

Like the last thing he says at the end; Digging won't make a bad DJ good, but it'll make a good DJ better.

that scene is amazing!

"if you dont know where hip hop has been, how can you say where its going?"

same goes to any style of music out there...know your roots!

You can find music on cd that dosen't exist on vinyl,

You can find music on vinyl that dosen't exist on cd,

I just like digging for music period...

And I can safely say for the record that I've done more vinyl digging in this city than any other dj I know of, with the exception of two other guys I always see when I'm out,

However I've finally gotten round to embracing cds AS WELL, mainly because there's a lot of music now that never gets pressed on vinyl, and I've realized that I now have a much larger and better repertoire of tracks to choose from.

Djs who think that djing is just about playing vinyl records are merely djs that think if they fit the "cliche" it somehow makes them more "real" and better, which is bollocks if you really think about it.

In fact they're missing the whole point of djing which is you're playing music to a crowd who wants to party...

Its irrelevant to them if you're playing a record you spent 10 years looking for or thats its a track off a cd, most people don't care. If they don't like your music they'll leave.

You gotta remember that back in the day, before cds or the internet, the only thing djs had to mix on that had a pitch control were turntables. Its the main reason turntables became a staple in the dj scene. Which is why you had to dig through tons of vinyl to find tracks that no one else had because it was the only medium you could use.

Now you have more and more of these online music stores where you can literally "dig" though hundreds or even thousands of tracks (just like a record store) and buy the songs you like.

You also have very sophisticated cd players with pitch and programs like Seratto which essentially allow you to do all the same things you can do with turntables.

The point is, djs using any of these mediums will all keep on getting gigs if they're good at what they do.

Not because they live in a appartment full of vinyl (like myself for example).

i just love how this forum always goes back to its good old my style is better than your style... fuck that man, who really gives a fuck if you're a killer psy, dnb, house, tech or whatever the fuck else dj... the djs i respect most are the djs who dont have a style branded to their heads, no narrowmindedness, no limits

i dont really know what im trying to say here but anyways... point is, be creative, this scene has got shitloads of dj and really fucking talented ones yeah... but creatives... im sad to say, not so many... why? prolly because of the elitism all the unwritten rules every seperate scene has for every style of dj... for fucks sake, live a little! and fuck, what pisses me off is that the crowd is so quick to judge and trash a dj for one trainwreck, one mix gone wrong, one fucked set... props to anyone and everyone who tries new shit, breaks their face and then try again, really, takes fuckin nerve to do it and i cant say ive had it many times yeh... fuck it, new shit new shit new shit, nothin but

as for the diggin... im down... for sure but then its not just about looking for tracks no ones ever heard before, there is so much more to djing, seriously... so much has been done but with all the new possibilities, technology-wise, new forms of djing must arise... not just vinyl, serrato, cdjs... i guess ive been digging that way more than otherwise for the past couple of months yeh

whatever, jibba jabba, have a smoke, eat some cake... this means shit if you want it to, dont take it the wrong way
I'm feeling like a killer robot right now..
