under 3k? Are you factoring in the cost of the computer into that? 'cause like I said, there's nothing you can get computer hardware wise on a mac, that you can't get for cheaper buying a PC. The only thing apple has going for them is the software at this point.
And, I'm guessing you didn't know, but the current MacOS is 100% a ripoff of what people have been doing in Linux for years. The little bar at the bottom with the icons isn't an apple invention.

i believe ya about the linux stuff...
and yeah i'm totally factoring the price of the computer. logic studio (including tons of instruments and huge sample-bank) = $500 (half that price if you are a student) apogee duet sound card = $500 and that leaves you 2k to spend on a decent iMac and extra ram. spending a similar value on a p.c. won't get you the same bang for the buck right now.

Also, good luck finding, say, a new graphics card for THE WORLD'S THINNEST NOTEBOOK.
Good luck finding a graphics card for any notebook. The macbook air is too weird a product. For 200$ more you can get a macbook pro, which is the best powerhouse laptop you can get. The solid state version of the air is the only one that impresses me, but that tech is too new and expensive. I think Asus has the right idea with the eee pc though; an 'appliance' computer should not be more than 500$. Update » nothingnopenope wrote on Mon Jan 21, 2008 @ 12:54am Linux has very little music and video software. So it is useless to me. They can make it look as good as they want, until the software comes out I won't be using it. They make great office terminals though, to run internet and basic office software.
For general use though, I'd prefer to use my 3 year old used powerbook than a modern 999$ plastic-crap PC laptop that's 4x faster, because the bad design and horrible OS (vista) actually ruin the benefits of the modern fast processors. That was more of Steve Job's work, and was the basis for a lot of OS X.

If any of you watched the horribly insipid tour video for this, it seems that the Macbook Air is a gimmicky extra-large iPod designed for people who

people compare to the asus ee pc because it is aiming for the same market: People who want a very small, portable system for basic tasks.
Sony is the king of small systems though, if you look up the X505 it is basically what the macbook air is trying to do now but was released 3-4 years ago. That pic is comparing an SSD to a non SSD laptop though, which isn't really fair price wise.
