very interesting video...
I agree with what the judge said about "over protecting is as harmful as under protecting" your own musical productions. Although, I believe that when it comes to blatantly stealing a sample and claiming it as your own PLUS applying stricter regulations protecting it - is a whole new ball game. I realize that laws and regulations can limit one's exploration for music and also slowdown their knowledge, understanding and their ability to differentiate everything associated to "greater" art. Even though I don't think I can ever see the logic behind taking somebody else's work and SELLING it as your own, if a producer took a sampled sound, tweaked it to a certain extent (recognizability?! - I love that...) and had the time of his life while producing a song in the comfort of his own home, who are we to wag the finger and say "no-no!"? All in all, I think sometimes smiles and enjoyment greatly outweighs the thirst for money, especially when underground communities have no big financial means. |

Bear in mind this video illustrates the history of one breakbeat, the amen break,
There are many other classic breaks out there, Essentially breaks started with funk, then with the advent of the sampler, hip hop producers looped various breaks from funk and rock records, Later the Brits sampled the early hip hop records to create UK breakbeat (130 bpm). UK breakbeat evolved into dnb in the early 90s as a sped up version (160 bpm), At the end of the 90s, nu skool breakbeat came about as a continuation of the early uk breakbeat sound, keeping the same tempo, So whenever I met a pretentious nu skool breaks dj, the first thing I ask is whether they know funk and old skool hip hop, if they don't, I know right away they're new to the game and probably don't much about breaks at all, I call it the Bliss test, Lol... |

Funny, from what I remember of mtldnb, the next step in the "bliss test" involves making fake accounts on a messageboard that are similarly named to the people who fail the "test" (complete with the same avatar), and then procede to post "as them" all sorts of shit about being gay and sucking cock, phoning them up at all hours of the night to prank call them, and talk shit about them at every opportunity, starting 3-4 threads per day about how much they suck because they aren't historians in the wonderful history of the breakbeat, and post in threads for their events that they can't mix and have no taste and that people should come hear YOU play instead of them. | |

Dude we were just having fun on there lol...
The fake accounts were a response to somebody else faking my account, all jokes, nothing to do with breaks The kid that got prankcalled was a wierd local wanker who was constantly following me around, he stopped after I called him a couple of times...no harm done... Get a sense of humour already and stop taking yourself so seriously bro ;) |
