Ableton Vs Logic

Apple just release Logic Studio, which looks awesome and is priced super competitively. For those of you who have used both Ableton Live and Logic Pro, is there a significant sound quality difference?
What would the pros/cons be in comparing them?

well of course logic would have a better sound engine especially with ableton's sync problem.

apparantly the synch problem is fixed in the new upgrade...
back on topic: ..if you google it theres a million people saying different things. I never really got into logic but Ive worked with people on it that have used it for years'n'years and my only conclusion is what he accomplished technically in 1 hour would have taken me roughly 10 minutes in ableton. There might be more options in logic aswell as better onboard niknaks...but you really hafta ask yourself if its worth it for what you want to do. For me personally it just overcomplicated the process to the point of exhaustion and I found it anything but Logical.

Good to know... I'm sure once you learn the quirks of it and can set up a nice template file, it should be just as smooth. I mean I love Live, but sometimes I wonder if tiny issues I've noticed stem from Ableton's relatively short experience with audio software. And then there's those who say Cubase for PC, Logic for Mac, point finale...
And with logic studio costing a mere 499$, it's damned tempting to jump on that professional bandwagon. Or you know I could just drink my questions away...

I use logic pro 7...only thing thats a bit tough is converting the VST insrtuments in FxPansion and into a AU (audio unit) which is exclusive to Logic (or limited to Logic) but you can ask anyone, the program is amazing...I still use reason sometimes, to make arrangements, and then rewire into logic, and it's fucking cool! |

Just out of curiosity, what could you possibly still be using Reason for?

hehehe, considering I started using Reason BEFORE I started smoking pot, and now I basically don't produce UNLESS i'm stoned... maybe reason was like crack!

if you are looking for a "studio-in-a-box" that can be used for efficient live sets, ableton would be the way to go. If you want something for serious production, logic might be the best. If you are on PC logic isn't an option.

Ableton is mostly for live sets IMO. Sure, you can deffinitley do good tracks with it (quality of the producer over what software they use and all that) but if you want to produce and not do live sets, Logic is the way to go.

Logic Studio is 449$ if you can get it at the student rate (eg go to apples site, enter your university ID number in the education store)

i do believe that you can do really good stuff in Live but i wonder if:
- i will produce as fast as i can with Live - is it gonna sound THAT much better (cause like fred says "quality of the producer over what software they use and all that" and i mean a real difference cause i already own Live and i really like it and i believe that with a home-made "master" (Ozone 3 in my case) it sounds pretty good see what i mean? lol

if you have access to good plugins , using live or logic won't make a difference in sound quality. |

yeah, overall I just prefer the interface of Logic over Live, though, that's for production. For actual live sets, ableton is the hands-down winner. Live, though, has the one problem that I find with reason, that Fruityloops and Logic do properly, and that's the way the piano roll works. Unfortunately, not everyone has a midi keyboard, and it would be really nice if you didn't have to change tool-modes to do everything in the piano roll.
In live/reason, you have to be in draw mode to add notes. If you want to delete them, you have to be in erase mode. If you want to re-size the length, you have to go to another mode. In fruityloops/Logic, you left-click the piano-roll, it adds a note. You right-click a note, it erases it. You click the end of a note and drag, you change the length. You wanna split it in 2, hold a key (shift in the case of FLP), and draw a cut in the spot you want to split it.. No need to change modes/learn hotkeys/click icons every time you want to do something. And that's honestly the only thing keeping me from using Ableton fully to produce, it just feels crippled, un-intuitive and overly-complicated to do something that could be done with mouse clicks.
